Here’s a repost following some conversations with athletes (and therapists) this week……..
What a common question this is.
Now this is different to what I’ve discussed previously about seeking a second opinion, this is about forming the team around you.
Now, of course, having multiple therapists certainly isn’t something everybody needs or wants.
For those that do, it’s the multidisciplinary support that is often the attraction.
I particularly promote collaboration between any therapists you do have helping you, too many therapists see each other as rivals and competitors and close ranks when other therapists (or professionals) may become involved.
If you look at the elite sports model, the athlete sits at the centre of the circle and all the other components around them, from coaches to therapists, conditioners, nutritionists etc are there to provide a service that puts the athlete first.
that model or level of involvement may feel too much for many, and often is, or it may be that you see it as something for the elites.
However, you may be surprised at the level of commitment you already have, maybe you have a coach, a fitness/personal trainer, a soft tissue therapist and a therapist when needed.
You can see that working together isn’t only something that could help, but is something that should be actively encouraged, to help these communicate, maybe a WhatsApp group could be a great idea?
I know that may sound to some of you like way too serious for the level of competitor you perceive yourself to be, but simply, good communication puts the athlete (you!) at the centre of that circle, everybody can come together for a common goal.
Imagine the common scenario of the therapist that wants you to ease of or tweak training due to that niggle, but the coach who isn’t aware, continues to programme intense training as a simple example of where collaboration and communication can help.
If you are a therapist working with multiple athletes from the same club, opening lines of communication with the coaching team should absolutely be a positive thing.
I’m yet to meet anyone who is credible that doesn’t want to do the best for the athletes they work with.
Failure to work together can at best lead to sub maximal performance, and at worst lead to problems and potential injury.
How detailed, how frequent, how committed this communication needs to be depends on those involved and the needs of the athlete, but I do believe it's something that is really beneficial if done properly.
Just be weary of avoiding it becoming a competition or conflict that can only be detrimental to the athlete – so therapists, coaches, trainers, leave the egos at the door.
