#ElectricPerspectives: What to Know About Permitting Reform From the @POLITICO Energy Summit
At the EEI-sponsored summit last week, lawmakers, business leaders, and Administration officials agreed cutting bureaucratic red tape is critical to strengthening grid resilience and delivering reliable, affordable energy.
More specifically:
*Permitting Reform Will Help Customers: Regulatory delays add up to 25% to project costs. Permitting reform removes this bureaucratic tax paid by customers.
*Red Tape Hampers American Competitiveness: Speed-to-power is vital. The U.S. risks losing its competitive edge to rivals if red tape constrains infrastructure buildout.
*Now Is the Time for Action in Washington: Bipartisan momentum in Washington is high, with leaders from both sides pushing to get a durable permitting package to the President’s desk this year.
The bottom line? To lower costs and power the economy, we need to get more steel in the ground and electrons on the grid.

As EEI President & CEO Drew Maloney wrote in a @POLITICO op-ed, the energy grid is one of America’s three great infrastructure innovations—alongside the railroad and the federal highway system. Check out the full op-ed here: https://t.co/efwvRjlQ7E
ICYMI: At today's @politico Energy Summit, EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney explained why siting and permitting reform is so important for every American:
“Permitting reform is about affordability and customer solutions, and we really have the opportunity... If you look at the cost imposed by the regulatory structure that we have right now in the United States, up to 25 percent of the project cost is regulatory bureaucratic red tape, and the customer has to pay that, and that's unacceptable... Ultimately if we want to talk about affordability and what the federal government can do to help lower the cost of power bills, do permitting reform. I'm optimistic we'll get there.”
EEI Vice Chair Drew Marsh, chair and CEO of @Entergy, also participated in the summit—watch highlights from his and Maloney’s discussions on why continued, large-scale investment in the energy grid is essential to maintaining reliability, supporting economic growth, and delivering the energy of every day: https://t.co/49UMbl2mal

@FERC Commissioner @LaCerteDA outlined the regulatory path forward for strengthening America's energy infrastructure at #EEI2026:
"We're at a place in FERC where we're working on so many issues that have broad consensus. ... It's important to be open to all perspectives as we move forward. That will build trust and buy-in across the aisle... We'll only get [to energy dominance] if we work together and drive affordability at the center."
Alphabet and @Google President & CIO Ruth Porat spoke at #EEI2026 about building the AI economy responsibly through strong utility and community partnerships:
"Our view is that it's critical that we are working with all of our partners to deliver AI's upside responsibly. At Google, that means, when we show up to build, we are investing to add to energy capacity. We are investing with our partners to protect energy affordability."
