Link Building Budgets, Costs & ROI: Data from 500+ SEO Experts 💸
👉 What financial investment ($) do you consider acceptable for acquiring one high-quality backlink?
👩💻 Based on insights from 412 experts, the average acceptable price is $508.95 - but it varies. Factors like domain authority and page intent play a big role.
- PR links? Their cost is more difficult to calculate - divide the total campaign expenses by the number of links secured.
- 80.9% predict link building will become harder and more expensive in the next 2 - 3 years due to competition, algorithm updates, and rising labor costs.
↪️ What do industry experts think?
💬 Kristaps Brencans: "We calculate 10-15 hours of work to acquire one high authority link. That, based on average DPR salaries in the US + overhead, comes out to $50/1h work, we could say that to acquire one link will cost in the range of $1k."
💬 Phillip Stemann: "It's difficult as a PR campaign of $3-5,000 often ends up with multiple links. So I'll average it and say $1,000."
💬 Bill Sebald: "$1,000, but needs to be in a competitive field."
💬 Edward Sturm: "If it's to a very important page, I'd consider paying $500-1000."

Do Backlinks Help You Rank in AI Search?
518 SEO Experts Weigh In 🔥
The past year has been a rollercoaster for SEO: AI overviews, zero-click results, Reddit flooding the SERPs, Google's crackdown on parasite SEO, and update after update. So, where does link building stand?
👉We asked 518 SEO professionals from agencies (44.4%), in-house teams (29.9%), and freelancers (24.9%). Most responses came from Europe (46.3%), the US (25.5%), and the UK (16.2%).
What Do the Experts Say?
📃Sophie Brannon (@SophieBrannon): Co-Founder, StudioHawk US
"I believe regular brand mentions, links, and citations help with appearing in AI search results, not just backlinks themselves. It's more about a site being referenced regularly across the web."
📃Carmen Domínguez (@Cocogainsbourg): Organic Growth Director
"I believe mentions do help appear in AI search results, so if the mention comes with a link, that's great, as this will help show up in AI search results like GPT Search or any other AI that uses active search on the internet."
📃Gianluca Fiorelli (@gfiorelli1): SEO Consultant & AI Strategist
"Backlinks as such, not really, but as part of a co-citation and branded strategy yes, if the backlinks are on websites typically used as sources by LLM. Then, because of RAG, backlinks improve visibility/ranking on Search Engines, hence the possibilities of being used as a source increase."
📃Szymon Słowik (@szymonslowik) Founder, https://t.co/E9pWKktMrC:
"Of being found by AI bots (so it's important but not sufficient factor)."
📃Simone De Palma (@SimoneDePalma2) Founder, SEO Depths:
"There's potential as long as the neural networks at the kernels of LLMs improve citations matching."
📃Ruan Smit (@RuanSmit_SA) SEO Specialist:
"Somewhat as it also uses search results to pull information, but it's not a big part of it, especially if deep research is used, then it just becomes a smaller part of the results AI provides."
So, Do Backlinks Affect AI Search Visibility?
Short answer: yes.✅
👇Most experts agree that backlinks still help with visibility in AI search for a few reasons:
• Google and Gemini rely on pages that rank well — and links help them rank
• ChatGPT pulls from Bing, which still follows traditional signals
• Perplexity and others give priority to trusted, widely mentioned sources
And this is only the start.
💡Bonus Insight: Are Competitors Still Buying Links?
91.89% of respondents say yes.
Last year it was 92%. The pattern continues.
