❄️ The Blizzard of 1996 — began 30 years ago today ❄️
An unforgettable storm. 16-32" of snow buried the DC area as one of the most prolific snowstorms on record blasted from North Carolina to Massachusetts.
The National Weather Service called it “widely regarded at the time for being the greatest amount of snow seen by the largest concentration of population in the United States.” 🌨️
And it didn’t stop there. Two additional snow events followed over the next five days, keeping snow cover deep and relentless across the region.
Then came the flip. 🌡️
A powerful January thaw triggered rapid snowmelt and led to historic flooding on the Potomac River — a dramatic reminder of how quickly winter can turn.
What do you remember from the Blizzard of ’96?

Puerto Rico has been a territory of the United States since 1898, with 3.2 million US citizens and over 350,000 service members who have served since the US War of Independence, including former Governor of Puerto Rico General Ramón de Castro and Puerto Rican soldiers at the Battle of Pensacola in 1781.
We have stood ready to defend our nation through World War I, World War II, the Gulf War, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, despite lacking the right to vote for the President or representation in Congress and facing discrimination in federal financial support. Yet, our commitment remains unwavering as we stand prepared to protect our fellow Americans against any enemy, domestic or foreign, willing to give everything for our American values and the US Constitution.
Those who disrespect our sacrifices know nothing of the actual service and honor of Puertoricans to America.
