Yesterday, my 7th PhD student defended their dissertation. Their topic is soft actuators, which has many applications to robotics but also some implications to physical reservoir computing. A few papers are currently under review, which I'll post when they're published.
Edge devices struggle to perform complicated tasks, such as audio recognition. Oscillator-based computers are a viable path to achieving this level of autonomy on the edge. New paper!

Is the heart actually an analog computer?
The heart was modeled as a van der Pol oscillator almost 100 years ago. Strangely enough, this basic model of the heart actually has a computational ability.
Part of https://t.co/TaY2vwQ1Kr, this review article from Md Raf E Ul Shougat (@NCState) & @edmonperkins ( #LAB2701 ) explores the van der Pol oscillator using various logical tasks in simulation, and verifies its use as a physical reservoir computer:

Our pre-print on "The epidemiology of long COVID in US adults two years after the start of the US SARS-CoV-2 pandemic". 7.3% of the US adult population (~18.5 million) reported having long COVID by July. What does the epidemiology look like? https://t.co/lbBIDWNe2l [thread]
The discrete element method is often used to model granular materials, like sands and grains. We made a new biological joint simulator using the method, so we can model the dynamics directly from CT scans:

The pendulum adaptive frequency oscillator is a nonlinear oscillator that can both learn and store information in a plastic state. We show how it works and built one, which can be found here: https://t.co/y7PeVQhAcG

1/🧵 BEWARE: Mild” COVID can cause #LongCOVID‼️
@Nature study of N=147 (31 w LongCOVID) found Covid infection exerts unique & prolonged effects on our innate & adaptive immune system over 8 months later.
This may drive Long Covid.

📍Really interesting that SA deaths are increasing a lot, more than a month after the peak in cases. #Omicron is not following the usual 14-21 day lag seen for other waves. Also, there is large >30% excess deaths above historical average—3000 excess/week.
