Pretty proud of this assessment that I created. Might just have to try it out this lacrosse season. See my final #CEP813 FAD 3.0 here! https://t.co/oVEdecBtH8
Monopoly is another example of a game where the procedural rhetoric matches pretty closely to the semiotic domain. In Monopoly, you use finance skills to buy "places" and build them up. You spend money, but you also collect money. The procedural rhetoric falls in line with this.
The procedural rhetoric fits in this case as your SIM character is typically unhappy if certain life events (taking out the trash for instance) aren't met. This is relays very closely to life. Furthermore you can go in debt if you dont manage your money, etc.
The SIMS is a virtual game where you work to build your life- through getting better jobs, houses, relationships etc. It employs semiotic domains such as mathmatics (cost of ownership vs salary) but also emotional semiotic domains (having a relationship).
Tenure is a CYOA game where a teacher can experience the environment of a school. This leads to decisions that have intended and unintended consequences and helps them understand that teaching is not solely about the education of the child, but the decisions made every day#CEP813
I found reading about Tenure to be extremely enlightening. As someone new to the P-12 teaching world, I would have LOVED to have played this before I entered into full-time teaching. #CEP813
External grammar is principles and patterns in terms of which one can recognize what is and what is not an acceptable or typical social practice, or in lacrosse terms, good sportsmanship, team plays, strategies etc.#CEP813
In #CEP813 I learned about semiotic domains from Super Mario Bros to basketball through Gee (2003). In PE, there are a variety of semiotic domains (basically one for every sport or activity from soccer to spinning).
For the purpose of exploring semiotic domains, I chose lacrosse. Internal grammar is principles and patterns in terms of which one can recognize what is and what is not acceptable or typical content. In other words, the rules and technical terms in lacrosse (cross, ball etc).
This module really challenged me, as a PE teacher, to use a different platform to create an assessment. As a PE teacher, we rarely use anything online, but this module perhaps enlightened the way I think about what assessments can look like. #CEP813
I just took two quizzes in my #CEP813 course. Quiz A was much more open-ended. It allowed the student to really explain their thinking, but it did not provide immediate feedback. Quiz B had more multiple choice questions, so there was less of an opportunity to get a sense (CONT)
of how the student went about their thinking, but there was immediate feedback. As a student, I much prefer the immediate feedback to know how I've done, but I also enjoyed the space to write out my thinking process. I think Quiz B would be my preference, especially with (CONT)
What’s interesting is I don’t know if many core beliefs have changed in my thoughts about assessment, but it’s clear I have a much more in-depth analysis about those beliefs. #CEP813
ADC 3.0 is COMPLETE! How exciting, but more importantly, what a journey. It was extremely enlightening to be able to have feedback and revamp in many versions, one I felt really promoted learning. See it here! https://t.co/NyeBGa2QcE #CEP813
There is also a myth that most young people are "born with technology in their hands" and should be able to operate regardless. The truth of the matter is, even who we deem most proficient, may need help when using these digital tools. #CEP813
Digital tools could change the way we view education. These tools offer a variety of affordances, from timely feedback, opportunities to inform instruction and learning, as well as a method of assessment that can be taken into the "Real World" #CEP813
That being said, there seems to be a number of overlooked constraints, no bigger than the need to have such technology to participate. This includes needing a mobile device (perhaps a specific brand, too) and access to the internet (via WiFi or cellular data).
