We, the Weizmann Institute of Science community, deeply mourn the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath of the Institute’s Chemical and Structural Biology Department. Prof. Yonath pioneered the study of the ribosome, the cell’s protein factory, and was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her research in this field. Her decades-long scientific journey led to an understanding of how various antibiotics work, helping pave the way for the development of new antibiotics and the fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Yonath, the first Israeli woman scientist to win a Nobel Prize, also received dozens of other awards and honors, including the Israel Prize in Chemistry and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Yonath exemplified how scientific vision, the courage to choose a major scientific question and unwavering dedication to its pursuit can lead to extraordinary achievements and expand the boundaries of knowledge for the future of humanity.
May her memory be a blessing.

🔬 New HSV-1 research reveals, for the first time, a high-resolution view of how the viral proteins UL9 and ICP8 begin unwinding HSV DNA at replication origins a critical first step for viral replication.
By mapping this process in detail, scientists have uncovered potential new drug targets that could help block HSV replication before it starts. While not a cure, this structural breakthrough could guide the development of next-generation antivirals. #HSV #HerpesResearch #Science

Hello, Moon. It’s great to be back.
Here’s a taste of what the Artemis II astronauts photographed during their flight around the Moon. Check out more photos from the mission: https://t.co/rzM1P0QbOl
Science research is mostly invisible to the public. To many it's obscure & irrelevant. And returns on science investments carry longer horizons than quarterly or annual reports
Yet it's the engine room of tech-innovation. Cut funds for science & you ultimately stall your economy
Trump: The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country.
The Schwarzschild Metric is a solution to Einstein's field equations in general relativity, which describes the spacetime geometry around a spherically symmetric, non-rotating, and uncharged mass (like a star or a black hole).
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado has led the struggle for democracy in the face of ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela. Ms Machado studied engineering and finance, and had a short career in business. In 1992 she established the Atenea Foundation, which works to benefit street children in Caracas.
Ten years later she was one of the founders of Súmate, which promotes free and fair elections and has conducted training and election monitoring. In 2010 she was elected to the National Assembly, winning a record number of votes. The regime expelled her from office in 2014. Ms Machado leads the Vente Venezuela opposition party and in 2017 helped found the Soy Venezuela alliance, which unites pro-democracy forces in the country across political dividing lines.
In 2023 she announced her candidacy for president in the 2024 presidential election. When she was blocked from running, she supported the opposition’s alternative candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. The opposition mobilised widely and collected systematic documentation that it was the true winner of the election. The regime declared victory and tightened its grip on power.
Ms Machado is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize first and foremost for her efforts to advance democracy in Venezuela. But democracy is also in retreat internationally. Democracy – understood as the right to freely express one’s opinion, to cast one’s vote and to be represented in elective government – is the foundation of peace both within countries and between countries.

Three chemists just won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry - for building materials with rooms inside them. At the molecular scale.
The story of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) - and how they could help save the planet.
🏅 Susumu Kitagawa – Kyoto University.
🏅 Richard Robson – University of Melbourne.
🏅 Omar Yaghi – UC Berkeley.
Their creation? Metal–Organic Frameworks.
Tiny crystalline structures with vast internal space like molecular hotels for gases.
Imagine a material full of microscopic rooms.
Each room can trap, store, or release specific molecules.
💧 Some capture water from desert air.
🌍 Others pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
☣️ Some even lock away toxic gases.
Chemistry - turned into architecture.
It started in 1989. Richard Robson tried connecting copper ions with a four-armed organic molecule.
The result?
A crystal full of empty cavities - stable in shape, but fragile in spirit.
He saw the potential but couldn’t yet hold it together.
Then came Susumu Kitagawa and Omar Yaghi.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, they cracked the code:
Kitagawa showed gases could move in and out - and predicted flexible frameworks.
Yaghi made them strong, tunable, and stable.
From fragile curiosity → functional material.
Today, scientists have built tens of thousands of MOFs.
They can be engineered for anything:
→ Capturing CO₂
→ Storing hydrogen
→ Filtering PFAS from water
→ Breaking down pollutants
→ Conducting electricity
Each design is a custom molecular tool.
It’s chemistry meeting engineering - atoms organized with the precision of architecture.
These frameworks don’t just exist. They work.
They turn invisible molecules into something we can control.
This isn’t just chemistry.
It’s future infrastructure - built one molecule at a time.
Short explanation of the physics Nobel Prize 2025
In classical mechanics you can know where a particle is and its momentum at the same time. In Quantum mechanics you can't. All information is in the wavefunction. Even if a particle is trapped, part of the wavefunction..
