Just a qualitative summary of the work of Yu Deng et al that led to this year's Fields medal. It is closely related to physics of the 19th century so I wanted to explain in simple terms which physics problems from the 19th century they solved and which are still open.
Deng–Hani–Ma begin with N classical hard spheres, each of diameter epsilon, moving by Newton’s laws and colliding elastically.
They take a scaling limit where N goes to infinity and epsilon to zero while the product is fixed.
This makes the gas extremely dilute, but particles still undergo order-one numbers of collisions over macroscopic times.
They showed that for initially uncorrelated data, the few-particle distributions then converge to a direct product of which satisfies the Boltzmann equation.
But of course the main physics prediction is that after a very long time we will obtain the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution, which says that the probability of finding a sphere with velocity v is proportional to e^{-v^2/T}. This is what is known as thermalization.
So they have not been able to discuss non-dilute gas and they have not shown thermalization. So there are still deep important open problems in that area!
