๐ Americans, in Japan, Christmas dinner is Kentucky Fried Chicken. And you have to reserve it.
It started in 1974 with KFC Japan's first Christmas campaign. One story says foreigners in Tokyo kept complaining they couldn't find a turkey anywhere, and fried chicken was the closest American thing around. It worked a little too well.
Now reservations open in early November. The Colonel statues outside the stores get dressed up as Santa. Christmas Eve is the busiest day of the year, with more than ten times the normal number of customers, and something like 3.6 million households order.
So on December 24th, Japanese families sit down with a bucket from Kentucky and a strawberry cake, and genuinely feel like they're doing an American Christmas.
I've never had the heart to tell them what you actually eat.
Be honest. Has anyone in America ever done this?

@TheEconomist โAttack democratic institutions?!โ Are you blind, demented or just plain liars?! Have you seen what the Workerโs Party did to the Brazilian democracy? Were you hiding under a rock for 4 years?!
On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China. What happened next?
The communist regime implemented a series of cultural, economic, and agricultural "reforms" that led to mass oppression, famine, and death. Scholars estimate that at least 65 million people perished due to these failed communist policies.
Remember the victims.
I am a responsible adult. I went into Tractor Supply for one bag of dog food. I would ask the court to consider that.
From the back of the store came a sound like a thousand tiny smoke alarms going off at once, all of them crying out for me specifically.
Chick Days.
Metal tanks glowing red under heat lamps. Hundreds of baby chickens, screaming with the fury and conviction of tiny auctioneers. One sign said "Easter Egger." I laughed, assuming it was a joke. An old man next to me said, "Lays blue eggs, bud," and did not laugh at all.
A little girl stood on her tiptoes at the tank. She looked at me. The old man looked at me. The employee looked at me.
It was the look a family gives a stranger at a wedding right before they hand him the baby.
"We takin' some home today?"
"I don't have a farm," I said. "I have a backyard the size of a parking space."
"That's plenty," said the old man, who did not know me, and was nonetheless now deeply involved in my life.
The minimum was six.
The girl named one Pancake. The old man picked out the "busy ones," which I was told is good. The employee put them in a cardboard box with air holes and said, "Wash your hands when you get home, okay?" in the voice of a pediatric nurse sending a new father home from the hospital.
In the parking lot, the old man wrote his phone number on the back of my receipt.
"Call me when they start layin'," he said. "You'll cry. Everybody cries."
I forgot the dog food.
I went in a man with a dog. I came out a man with a dog and six children.
Nestled in the Large Magellanic Cloud, near Dorado, the brilliant nebula known as NGC 2060 is what remains of a supernova.
Such explosions mark the violent deaths of massive stars, hurling searing-hot debris into the surrounding space.
