In a major advancement for cardiac care, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has successfully conducted its first pacemaker insertion procedure. This groundbreaking achievement took place on Monday September 9, 2024. The groundbreaking procedure was a collaborative effort between a team of renowned cardiologists from the Cardiovascular Education Foundation based in the United States and the skilled cardiology doctors at RSUTH, combining advanced expertise and cutting-edge technology to ensure the success of the operation.

A pacemaker is a small device implanted in the chest to regulate abnormal heart rhythms. It is used to treat various forms of arrhythmias, including bradycardia (low heart rate). The device sends electrical impulses to the heart to maintain a normal heartbeat, ensuring the heart pumps blood efficiently throughout the body.United States.

The RSUTH team, under the guidance of the visiting American cardiologists, employed advanced imaging and monitoring technology to ensure the correct placement and functioning of the pacemaker. Throughout the procedure, real-time data was monitored to adjust the pacemaker settings and optimize the patient’s heart function.

Post-surgery, the patient was closely monitored in the hospital’s recovery unit. Initial reports indicate a smooth recovery with promising results in regulating heart rhythms and improving overall cardiac health.

The collaboration between the American and local teams underscores RSUTH's commitment to providing high-quality cardiac care and its growing reputation as a center of excellence in specialized medical procedures. The successful pacemaker insertion not only enhances the hospital’s capabilities but also reaffirms the commitment of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara GSSRS @SimFubaraKSC, Executive Governor of Rivers State to providing high-quality and advance healthcare for Rivers People.

At its 133rd meeting on June 13, 2024, the Senate of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria reviewed and approved the recommendations of the Faculty Board of Paediatrics regarding the report from its Accreditation Visitation Panel to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).

The decision grants full accreditation to the RSUTH'S paediatrics training program for a period of five years. With this approval, RSUTH can now train up to twenty-two senior and twenty-two junior residents starting from June 13, 2024.

This endorsement reflects RSUTH commitment to maintaining high standards in paediatric medical education and training.
