Everyone is trying to get the "film look" today with modern digital cameras but most study the wrong thing. The answer is not in DaVinci nodes.
Production design, wardrobe, and lighting factor in so heavily that any "lut" or plugin simply can't achieve the true look. You can fake the grain, halation, and color all you want but if you don't get those core factors right it just looks dull.
SUPERBAD (2007) shot digital (Panavision Genesis HD) and looks more filmic than most modern digital films, with far better technology.
I keep revisiting old movies like REAL STEEL (2011) shot on early digital cameras and I can't help but wonder... why does this look so good? I'm almost done a video script about this.
