I am left utterly charmed by
Elif Batuman's brain! Her reading advice: Quantity is important, because books are a product of their time and place, and the toxic ideas of the time get baked in. Once you read enough, you learn to discard the toxic parts, and keep what helps you.
@Powells@RebeccaSolnit 's 'Call Them by Their True Names' has been on my bedside table for YEARS! It is the first for 2023 and I recommend it with enthusiasm even while I contemplate continuing with this platform 😝😟
'We tend to treat people on the fringe as ideologues and those in the centre as neutral, as though the decision not to own a car is political and the decision to own one is not...' Once again delighted by @RebeccaSolnit -such a #relief to read #essayist#integrity#truthteller
Shocking. The Premier of Ontario has pre-emptively suspended the right to strike for public sector workers for up to five years. Solidarity with @CUPEOntario in their struggle for better pay and conditions in the face of such draconian legislation https://t.co/KsBsdKX2dv
Just got off the phone with a Ward 5 resident concerned that they haven't yet received their voter's card (I also haven't!). This is a concern - especially given that the first advance poll is this Fri Oct 7th. Sharing the Advance Poll dates & details again so people are aware!
@Stephen_Hurley @ozekiland 's "The Book of Form and Emptiness" was a stunning reminder of how we can misunderstand people so fundamentally and the power of being seen, finding your people and so much more. Highly recommended!
@LibraryThing completely smitten with the characters in @ozekiland 's The Book of Form and Emptiness. I don't want it to end... I had to read it after listening to the audiobook. So well done!#fridayreads@HamiltonLibrary
Anyone remember when we hung this red uppercase letter ‘A’ to announce to our #HamOnt neighbours that in this home we support and celebrate #thearts S’not necessarily what they mean at the #vax clinic Even if it thrilled me :)
Still have #ferrantefever after reading all you can? See @lizstrout 's convo with her https://t.co/P05ZZFkwVW
"...I began to feel that the third person – especially if skilfully used – was a trick. In reality there is no story of the other that is not filtered through an “I”.
@AdrienneLaF#Solnit 's insight, fact finding, story telling bundled up in what some might diminish by calling a bio of #Orwell bc it is so much more. It #inspires#informs & sheds light on another side of the writer we think of as simply wary of totalitarianism or creator of another dystopia
"I don't read books by men because I feel well-versed in the human male experience from my education" Another #graphicnovel that impresses by conveying so much about a modern existence & defies criticism of the genre as 'too simplistic' Thank you @erin_r_williams
Something so terribly unappealing about the concept of these 'immersive' #artexhibits and partly I resist bc the #artist had no intention of showing their work this way. the #vangogh details make the distaste nearly tangible
