My #fluids class moved onto waves this week. So I thought I’d show them how water moves under waves to help them bridge the gap between the textbook and real life… here I tracked the centroids of the ping pong balls using openCV for python
Our @efml_ukzn's latest research on the #coralreefs at Sodwana has just been published with @SpringerNature in Environmental Fluid Mechanics. We found some cool stuff using a combination of @FLOW3D_CFD LES model and field data.

This camera took snapshots at a rate of 100 billion frames per second, fast enough to capture a pulse of laser light spreading out in a Mach cone, the optical equivalent of the sonic boom created by an airplane traveling faster than the speed of sound https://t.co/QCw9lV5XM7
In prep for my talk today on the #KZNFloods, have a look at the @eumetsat vid of the formation of the cutoff low that resulted in over 300mm of rain in 24hrs. Explanation below:
#climatechange is happening but impacts are difficult to predict because climate models cannot resolve the small scale physical processes driving irreversible changes. e.g. mixing in the ocean relies on other small scale models that attempt to link generic properties of mixing.

The stadium lights went out in the #CarlingCurrieCup clash between Western Province and the Pumas and the isiXhosa commentators could not believe it 😂😂

We wish our MSc student Kemira Naidoo all the best in her MSc examination.
Kemira (an engineer @eThekwiniM) explored the new @Delft3D FM model to reproduce "coastal" scale flow features along the East coast of South Africa #oceanography#ocean#environmental@UKZN
Internal Waves!! … 🧵 coming… I recently travelled to Qunu Falls, iXopo #SouthAfrica and witnessed these awesome internal waves in the #clouds above before a frontal weather system arrived… Firstly how cool and beautiful? So let’s talk a little bit about the #Physics here…
whooooo is working on the #fluiddynamics of this system, there's got to be somebody! @KakaniKatija do you know??? I remember thinking about this years ago and I know someone was working on it right?
Climate change is projected to increase electricity spending but reduce overall end-use energy expenditure, according to a study published in Nature. https://t.co/wJxg24y3FT
@CalvinWells92 flying the #efm flag high, this is the first part of many publications on the role of the agulhas current and shelf bathy on cold water upwelling events on the east coast of South Africa… vital for #Coralreefs survival
@ProfMattEngland Happy Thursday & welcome back to our #Flowebinar thread!
Locomoting in a turbulent environment: Ways to study microscale processes in a large-scale ocean, from Mimi Koehl.
