@yishan I’d rather push advanced geothermal. Small footprint, no waste, can size to small communities or large. Works in conjunction with variable wind and solar etc.
@RabbleChorus@jimbuilds@ChrisGloninger They also seem to never acknowledge that the dreaded dirty backup they claim to fear having to build is largely already built. It’s the existing oil & gas assets they’re currently using.
I think their real fear is when people realize how dirty, inefficient & expensive they are.
@jimbuilds@ChrisGloninger It’s always amazes me when the argument against renewables is that they may require backup (which they presume is dirty), so may as well not even try & instead stick to dirty sources.
That never made any logical sense, beyond making a lot of baseless assumptions.
@nickofnz Perhaps all nuclear plants which currently rely on rivers for their cooling should be retrofitted to allow for evaporative or alternative cooling?
At least the plants that are critical & potentially negatively impacted by drought.
@johnrhanger I think one factor leading to steep depreciation of EV values has been concerns over battery life. But as the lifetime is proven to be longer than feared, and if lower battery costs in thefuture results in lower replacement costs, then that becomes less of a concern.
@Ragcha@johnrhanger The major reason for the S-curve will be as market share increases, not only will the price of EVs continue to become competitive or better vs. ICE cars, but more automakers will have viable electric products to choose from, while ICE development becomes stale in comparison.
@EzraHabakkuk@currybum87@sydney_ev The way things are going most batteries which are no longer suitable for electric vehicles will be removed & repurposed for things like stationary storage. So it not only extends battery lifetime before recycling but makes the used batteries more valuable.
@p17ete@dorfman_p Container ships with containerized batteries which can be placed low in the ship to act as ballast & can be swapped out as needed seems like a promising use case.
@FollowTheScien4@janrosenow For places already with district heating it seems to be a good resource to help reduce fuel costs & improve reliability while providing a place to send excess energy, which otherwise would be curtailed. And you could build it to scale depending on the demand requirements.

@dorfman_p Placing floating PV solar panels on hydropower reservoirs seems like an easy win. Not only can you utilize the existing transmission for the solar power generated, but the floating panels help to reduce water losses due to evaporation at surface.
@phoenixFXG@JordanEVGuy Sports teams can always leave for greener pastures if they choose to, but they can’t pack up a stadium & take it with them.
For better or worse that stadium will stay with the city for the long term, regardless of who plays there on Sundays. So it’s not out of line to have a say
@phoenixFXG@JordanEVGuy IMO if you’re going to set aside a huge amount of land in a metropolitan area for a parking lot, might as well invest a little bit more to actually make it productive throughout the year & benefit the public at large in some way. Especially since it pays for itself eventually.
