Reserve Senate Candidates Petition Ombudsman to Seek Election Annulment Over Barcode Ballots
A group of reserve Senate candidates has asked the Office of the Ombudsman to petition the Constitutional Court to void the 2026 general election, alleging that barcodes and QR codes printed on ballots violated the constitutional requirement for secret voting.
Speaking on February 19 after submitting the complaint at the Election Commission (EC) office, group member Akkarawat Phongthanachalitkul said the inclusion of scannable codes made ballots invalid and rendered the election unlawful. He argued that the constitution mandates voting to be “direct and secret,” and that the ballot design undermined voter confidentiality.
The group previously filed a related petition with the Administrative Court, which has forwarded the matter for legal consideration. They claim the EC exceeded its authority and violated citizens’ rights in managing the election.
