Update from @reemadamin & me: Some Chicago school board members say the district will soon have CEO finalists (again).
Others and groups such as the principals union are escalating calls to pause the search until a fully elected board takes over in 2027.

@SteveStaeger I think it was understood. Great thread. If that conversation happens, count me in. We try to practice empathetic, no-surprises reporting at Chalkbeat in sensitive situations with sources that don't have experience with the media. So ... quite a lot!
Excellent thread from @SteveStaeger on how journalists can and should cover tragedies with care. Not all local reporters are this good and not all national reporters are this bad, but this is how it plays out a lot of the time.
The reporter who wrote the story brags on his LinkedIn bio that he "parachutes in" to communities to cover crises.
I don't know about you, but I'm sick of people parachuting in to my community for a "scoop" with little care for the impact their tactics have on a community.
"He shouldn’t have had to suffer for almost three years before he was able to receive the type of help that he needs." @reemadamin and @mina_bloom_ dig into whether migrant students in Chicago are getting bilingual education required by state law.
Last year, @mina_bloom_ and I found that many migrant kids settling down on Chicago's South and West sides often weren't getting the help they needed.
This year we wondered: How well resourced are schools that are supposed to have bilingual ed programs?

NEW: Last year, @SSKedreporter & I tackled a complicated question: How is Chicago’s graduation rate rising when high school students are missing so much school?
Almost 25,000 missed more than 35 days last year — double the 2019 number.

What a week that was. Grateful for the talented, extremely hard-working and super well-informed @reemadamin, @beckyvevea and @MilaKoumpilova, who stepped up to give Chicagoans authoritative coverage of the shakeup at Chicago Public Schools.

Happy Giving Tuesday! Local news is a civic good and needs public support. I will be donating today to news organizations that keep me informed, and I hope you’ll consider a gift to Chalkbeat. Any donations today will be doubled through a matching grant.

One Tennessee school district’s list of nearly 400 books removed from library shelves, including titles from everyone from Dr. Seuss to Toni Morrison, is being used by other school systems as a possible template to follow — from @marta_w_aldrich

The election results put an exclamation point on pervasive concerns about distrust and dissatisfaction with the news media. Now a reckoning is underway. Media execs and rank-and-file reporters are wondering what needs to change. So here are some concrete ideas... 🧵
Very much want to see this, and then read all of the religion reporting takes and angles. In the meantime, I don't want to know anything about it, @religiongal. :)
Yet another fascinating exploration of Heretic. This one about the idea of resurrection and the film's ending (spoilers). Latter-day Saints, if you have seen it, what did you think about the ending?

A federal hearing about special education teacher shortages turned into a debate about how the elimination of the U.S. Department of Education could affect students with disabilities. Before taking office, Trump casts a shadow — from @kalynbelsha:
