@nickshirleyy Chinas system started work in the late 1980s and it looked liked what your showing when it’s was being built in the early 2000s between Beijing and Tianjin plus other routes.
In the US, status quo transportation engineering is responsible for much damage.
But the real reason we don't have more nice places comes from land use regulations. Local planning depts make pictures like below illegal. 😖
I've been writing about bad transit maps for 20 years and our firm now has a practice that makes good ones. Good transit maps highlight frequency because it is both essential and otherwise invisible. 1/
US public transit advocates: Don't just envy Europe. Start by envying Canada.
Find the Canadian city most comparable to yours and see what the Canadians do in a similar situation, with similar land use and economic history.
I wish more Americans could wrap their heads around this. Amsterdam is easier to drive in than Atlanta -- despite far, far less road capacity -- because so FEW people have reason to drive cars there.
Give people choices, and the whole city works better.
The Atlanta metro area is 60% more sprawling than Tokyo’s but has 35 million fewer people. Our country's metro areas are not full, it's just car dependency that's inefficient and hinders economic growth.
However frustrated you may be by the dominance of cars, it's important not to talk about motorists this way. Cars are a problem in cities, for purely geometric reasons, but the people in the cars are not enemies. We just want them to have more and better options.
