The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator.

But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.

So, I am announcing today that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of my term.

The people of Illinois have honored me to serve as their Senator for three decades. I am forever grateful.
But now, I look forward to passing the torch to Juliana Stratton at the end of my term!

Nearly 30 years ago, I announced my first run for the United States Senate from the deck of my home in Springfield.

Today, at that same location, I spoke about why I will not be seeking re-election next year.

I have given more than half of my life to House and Senate Congressional service, and I’ve always tried to stand up to power on behalf of the people of Illinois and our country.

I am proud of what I have achieved and hope my record will speak for itself.

What happens when you don’t have health insurance when you most need it? You feel helpless.

I’ve been there.

Our first daughter was born with a serious heart defect, and I couldn’t afford health insurance.

We sat in a hospital’s charity ward. I prayed to God the doctor would be able to save my baby’s life.

She survived.

But I’ve never felt more helpless in my life than at that moment. My little girl came into this world, and we were so blessed to have her. But her father couldn’t provide her health insurance.

I’ve *never* forgotten this when health care is up for debate.

ALL of us want good health insurance. The thought of cutting health care to give the wealthiest people a tax break is insensible, unthoughtful, and inhumane.
