Last night's incident at China Maldives Friendship Bridge was a near miss.
Engineers from Second Harbour Engineering Company (SHEC), the builder of the bridge, carried out inspections last night and again this morning. Alhamdhulillah, there is no structural damage, only surface scratches. These will be repaired by SHEC using suitable and adequate standard methodology, under the monitoring, inspection and maintenance arrangement we have in place with them, provided through Chinese grant aid.
A vessel out of control near Malé can affect two bridges, Velana International Airport and other critical infrastructure, a disaster that could affect the life of the whole capital. That is why response must begin before, not after. The Government has been proactive in building this capacity. MPL is already in the process of acquiring two new powerful tugs capable of taking hold of a drifting vessel before it reaches the bridges, with delivery expected within 2 months. We will further review port anchorage arrangements and develop clear emergency communication and response procedures with the Coast Guard and other relevant authorities.

When the Government wanted to force the tourism industry to exchange 20% of its USD, these were some of the promises:

1. All SOEs would get the USD they need.

2. Every traveller would get USD 1,000 from the BML airport counter by the beginning of 2026.

3. Card limits would increase to USD 1,400.

4. TT demand would be catered for within 6 months.

Here we are at the end of August 2026. The tourism industry has been giving the Government its 20%, while the market rate for USD is around MVR 23, higher it was before taking 20%

I’ll leave it to each of you to decide how many of those promises were actually delivered.

Now the Government wants 40% of tourism USD, with a new set of promises and pledges.

I firmly believe that if Rufiyaa spending and wastage were brought under control, and our USD properly managed, even the 20% exchange requirement we already have could have achieved things we previously thought impossible.

But taking more USD without fixing how it is managed solves very little.

If we manage 40% the same way we managed 20%, the Government may get the dollars it wants for its projects ( projects that too often enrich those around political power ) while ordinary Maldivians will once again be left asking: Where did all those dollars go, and what did we actually get in return?

It’s not what you get but how you manage that matters
