@ZJAyres I took 3+ months away, with the support of my v. understanding supervisor, to help take care of a sick family member. It took me another couple months after that to get totally back into the diss.-writing rhythm. Finished the PhD & now work as an academic editor.
@joshshepperd Some 1, but also I graduated from college in 08; financial crisis & fear about having health insurance also fueled my going into & staying in grad school. Increasingly 2 the longer I was in & saw the system up close. Now, after finishing the phd, I'm not going in academia. :P
@AcademicChatter This is the Peps. He frequently slept on the job, stared pensively out the window, or tried to distract me, but he was the best co-worker this dissertator could have asked for. He made sure to get me out of the house and to engage in silly play multiple times a day. #PhdPets
Well worth a read: a moving and powerful discussion of the work of Shalamov and the perils of translation. The Forced Conversion of Varlam Shalamov https://t.co/POKYXtXc4E
agreed. This ballet is ridiculous, as are a lot of the "classics" if we look at the subject matter/story alone. The orientalism angle is more useful for understanding this hot mess; same goes for a number of Ballets Russes works imho. ABT could use a better program writer.
@MarinaHarss Interesting - though the more straightforward explanation would be the Edward Said orientalism angle: that the ballet says more about western fantasies about an imagined โorientโ than anything about real culture or history.
@simonm1@Princeton Thank you @simonm1! (& sorry for seeing this so late!--was off twitter for a bit.) I couldn't have asked for a more supportive and brilliant supervisor! Grateful and relieved to be done, though I already miss researching. :)
A wonderful reminder for all of us: you don't have to undo the work of the scholars that came before you to make a new contribution. Add new windows to the frame they built, and don't burn it down.
@ehh_ptr The loss of library privileges/remote access upon completing my PhD is devastating to me, esp b/c I'm not going into academia "proper." I would've lost these privileges over a yr ago (before completing PhD) had my amazing adviser not petitioned on my behalf to keep them.
This is the quit-lit barn-burner to end all quit-lit barn-burners. The decline of the academic job market transformed into literature. With a few of my Twitter friends cast with well-sketched character cameos. https://t.co/TOGuwszkm1
@DrRadchenko Thank you for sharing parts of these documents & your thoughts on them! I absolutely love these types of verbatim transcripts--relied on them a lot for my diss. on Soviet/GDR cultural politics. What archive are these docs from and they let you take pics?! nice.
4 May 1926, Monte Carlo: Ballets Russes premiere of 'Romeo and Juliet'. Music, Constant Lambert (who was terrified of Diaghilev). Choreography, Nijinska. When the lovers (Lifar and Karsavina) were supposed to die, they did nothing of the sort, but eloped in an aeroplane instead..
