Why are we feeding babies sugar?
Babies do not need added sugar.
They are growing faster than almost any other time in life. Their brains are developing, their nervous systems are developing, their blood volume is increasing and they are building new tissue every day.
That requires actual nutrients.
Protein. Fat. Iron. Zinc. B12. Choline. Essential fatty acids.
This is exactly where animal foods make sense.
In a randomised trial, breastfed babies given puréed beef as a complementary food accepted it just as well as infant cereal, while the beef provided substantially more zinc. Zinc is especially important during rapid growth because babies’ requirements increase while the amount supplied by breast milk naturally falls.
Other research looking at meat during weaning has found better haemoglobin measures with greater red meat intake, and systematic reviews of the trials conclude that meat is an important source of bioavailable iron and zinc during infancy.
Meat also naturally provides B12, complete protein and highly absorbable iron. Eggs provide fat, protein and choline, one of the nutrients needed in large amounts while the brain is developing.
And yet we’ve somehow created an entire industry selling babies sweet pouches, biscuits, cereals and desserts before they can even speak.
Added sugar provides none of those essential nutrients.
A baby does not need to learn that every meal should taste like pudding.
Give them meat. Eggs. Fish. Full-fat dairy where tolerated. Proper whole foods.
We have one of the most nutrient-hungry humans on the planet…
and we’re selling them sugar in a pouch.
Your breakfast is either medicine or poison.
Most people start their day with sugar: cereal, pastries, juice, oatmeal with dried fruit. Within an hour, their blood sugar crashes, they’re hungry again, and they’re locked into cravings for the rest of the day.
Protein changes everything.
When you eat protein first thing, you stabilize blood sugar, reduce ghrelin (your hunger hormone), and activate satiety signals. You’re literally reprogramming your metabolism. About 30% of protein calories are burned just digesting it, that’s the thermic effect of food working in your favor.

This “blending powder” consists of Gum arabic, maltodextrin, xanthan gum, natural flavor, silica and stevia extract (rebaudioside-A)
The reason they use it is because it acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer
The gums and other components create a smoother, more consistent frozen blended texture and slows separation that would otherwise happen soon after the drink leaves the blender
Starbucks employees have been making videos saying it makes their throats hurt, makes them cough and makes their head hurt
The silica is silicon dioxide and acts as an anti-caking agent. This is a very controversial ingredient for health concerns
But it’s also a concern for these Starbucks employees because inhaling it is dangerous

There are things I’ve stopped chasing, because I’ve seen what they actually do to the human body — and I can’t unsee it.
Here’s what I willingly go without:
Ultra-processed food. This is the one that matters most. 73% of the American food supply is ultra-processed. These products are engineered by food scientists to override your hunger signals, hijack your dopamine system, and keep you eating past the point of fullness. I don’t eat them because I’ve watched what they do to my patients — and what they were quietly doing to me.
Skipping movement. Exercise is mitochondrial medicine. It’s the single most powerful intervention we have for insulin sensitivity, neurogenesis, mood regulation, and longevity. At 66, I am in the best shape of my life and that did not happen by accident.
Neglecting my brain. Cognitive decline is not inevitable. It is largely driven by lifestyle — blood sugar dysregulation, chronic inflammation, poor sleep, sedentary behavior, nutritional deficiencies. What you do in your 40s, 50s, and 60s determines what your brain looks like in your 80s.
Alcohol. I’m not rigid about it. A glass of wine with good friends, good food, good conversation — sometimes that’s medicine too. But the one-off drink that fragments my sleep, tanks my HRV, and clouds my thinking the next morning is a trade that stopped making sense a long time ago.
Chronic stress. I’m not immune to it. At 66, I’m still writing, seeing patients, traveling, building. Stress is part of the job. The difference is I no longer let it sit in my body unchecked. Chronic, unmanaged stress raises cortisol, suppresses immune function, shrinks the hippocampus, disrupts sleep, and accelerates aging at the cellular level.
After 30 years in functional medicine, I’ve made these trades because the return is undeniable — energy, clarity, strength, sleep, resilience, and a body that functions the way it was designed to.
You don’t have to give up everything. But you do have to get honest about what things are actually costing you.
To find a hidden tumour, they inject you with radioactive sugar and photograph where it goes.
