Salt glaciers in the Zagros Mountains of Iran are some of the strangest and most beautiful geological features on Earth.

They look like slow‑moving rivers of ice, but they’re actually made of rock salt.

The way they form is completely different too. Deep underground, there are huge layers of halite-rich salt and because salt is lighter and more flexible than the surrounding rock, it slowly pushes upward through cracks. When it finally breaks through the surface, it spills out and creeps downslope, spreading into wide, glacier‑like lobes. These flows can stretch for kilometers, even though they move at a pace so slow you’d never notice it happening.

The Zagros region is perfect for this kind of phenomenon because it sits on top of thick deposits of Hormuz salt, laid down more than half a billion years ago in the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian era.

Over millions of years, the collision between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates squeezed and folded the land, forcing this ancient salt upward. That’s how the area ended up with so many salt domes (mushroom‑shaped bulges of rising salt) and the salt glaciers that ooze out from them.

Southern Iran alone has more than 130 of these domes, many still actively flowing.

What makes these salt glaciers especially striking is their appearance. The salt mixes with clay, iron oxides, and other sediments, creating surreal patterns in shades of pink, red, orange, and white. Some glaciers even form hourglass or bow‑tie shapes, where a central dome feeds salt into valleys on both sides. And the scale is massive, some of these formations stretch up to 14 kilometers across and are easily visible from space.

Despite the freezing temperatures, we served two very long queues of people in need.

The demand for warmth was higher than ever, and our team worked tirelessly to provide:

Seeing the relief on people's faces as they held a warm cup of tea reminded us why we do this.

Picked up this old Tayto crisp packet on Bray Head today.

Not sure what year it’s from, but Crisps were 20p back then, hard to even process now.

What really got me though is how new the packet still looks.

A strange little reminder of how long plastic sticks around after we’re done with it.
Nostalgic… but also a bit unsettling.
