@MegynKellyShow Ironically, Haitians in Haiti have likely felt the same way about America for the last 100 years or so! If only we’d minded our own fucking business.
@VanLathan Baton Rouge (and really all of Louisiana south of I10) seems like a place that could be ripe for a populist movement, if someone could just get the ground game going
@offbeatorbit Went on a week long trip to NY to visit my nephew. Few days in to the trip my 10-yo informed me gravely (in a tone I imagine one might use to come out to their parents), “mom, I am a New Yorker.”
People talk a lot about David Duke’s virulent racism, but are less aware of the role that corporate interests played in elevating him, orchestrating one of the most shameful chapters in this state’s political history.
Fun fact: Buddy Roemer (R) was actually one of La.’s best govs on the environment, his LDEQ was trying to tie tax breaks to environmental scorecards. So the petrochemical industry dumped $$$ into that race, running anti-Roemer ads & helping Duke win that primary.
As a southerner who just spent a week in NYC, one of my big takeaways is how much cleaner, safer, & easier to navigate it was than home. Also, so much more nature/green space than my own mid-sized city!
@mattyglesias I think a better explanation for why Cassidy lost is that he tried to have it both ways. He wanted to be the “voice of reason” but then ran ads proclaiming that he was actually the real Trump candidate. He should have just picked a lane & stuck to his guns.
@SeanMcCarthyCom My mom’s dad (born in 1903, native French speaker & cruelly shamed for it in school, union welder) loved Huey P Long, revered him almost as a religious figure. He once told my mother that “democrats were the working men & republicans were the bosses.”
@jean_twenge This decline coincides with the widespread, accelerated adoption of EdTech. The previous 2 decades had shown steady improvements. Google took over American classrooms & made billions making our kids dumber.
@payback8bx@AnthonyQuinton0@MarcoFoster_@briebriejoy “Illegal” means nothing without enforcement. If you take $100 out of the till at the end of the night & your boss calls the cops, they will come arrest you. If your boss shorts you $100 in your paycheck & you call the cops, the cops will tell you to call a lawyer.
@bonchieredstate Are you under the impression that the criminal justice system of Louisiana is somehow run by “the left”?? Louisiana literally locks up more people than almost anyone else in the world.
@LoonyLegislator@janecoaston In what sense was his life ruined? Bc he didn’t get to be the governor of Virginia? He made $400K in private legal practice in 2023.
@FreeThinkinBro1@gosukani@offbeatorbit The weakness of that data is that virtually ALL public high school students take standardized tests like the ACT/PSAT (it’s typically mandated) but not all homeschooled students do. Those who opt to take them are of course the ones who will perform very well on them!
