Today I sang three ceremonies to remember them.

Singing at Colleville Montgomery this morning in the presence of five Second World War veterans. They have lived with the scars of war for over eighty years, and they continue to serve by reminding us of the vulnerability of peace.

William Joseph Cliffe of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry is buried in Vauville, France. This afternoon we held a ceremony at his grave, on which is written: "In My Heart He Will Always Live, The Best Of Sons That God Could Give. Mother"

He was 20 when he died.

I’m in Normandy to sing nine commemorations for British, Canadian, French, and US veterans and casualties. So many mixed feelings: the joy of seeing friends, sadness about those who can’t return, cringing at jingoism and feeling moved by gratitude for peace.

Last night I was a guest soloist at a concert in Leiden’s City Hall to raise funds for the Band of Liberation’s tour in Normandy. I spoke about the role of music in remembrance: how it has the capacity to help people confront pain and heal.
