In case you're wondering how things are going in Vancouver politics, last night the school board voted to reinstate the school liason officer program and today at the budget meeting the mayor asked if libraries had considered generating their own revenue streams.
Realised today was Vasili Arkhipov Day; shortly afterwards, realised today would be the day of my reread of @Ada_Palmer 's Terra Ignota where I hit the chapter where a group of people selflessly remove the means of humanity to annihilate itself. Resonance!
We got more census data!
That means our own @ksituan mapped out plenty of language-related data for iPolitics 🦌
You can read more about the language census data here: https://t.co/y4mMcVxIn6
There are very few places left where you can simultaneously write open source software, create things lots of people actually use, contribute to a mission that isn't "getting people to click ads", and do it all remotely.
@rstudio is one of them. Join us!
I solved Semantle #133 in 55 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 13.15. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #6. [And then I spent 48 guesses veering wildly around the map.] My penultimate guess had a similarity of 48.90 (950/1000). https://t.co/rt39zuk1mj
@carlyrigby@IronDogBooks I ended up getting two--Piranesi by Susanna Clarke (which I'd gotten out as a library book, adored, and wanted my own copy to lend out) and I Hope We Choose Love by Kai Cheng Thom/@razorfemme , which is top-notch so far :)
Just got absolutely spoiled by the kind, generous souls at @IronDogBooks -- walked in to buy a book on a whim on Saturday, lucked into winning a draw, and now I have riches beyond imagining! 🤩📚❤️🔥
My mentality flipped from "yeah, I'm not going to buy too much, I'm trying to avoid hanging onto a lot of stuff" to "dragon hoarding mode" so fast, I tell ya...
"In Alberta, councils appoint all police board members to city councils. And its police commissions send policing plans and budget information to councils, where the elected representatives make the decisions."
^ Sounds better!! @bcndp any reason we don't have this? 🙃
Here's how to apply to the LingComm Grants! https://t.co/KGlLioG0CJ
We're hoping to give out 4 x $500 Project Grants and 10 x $100 Startup Grants, but we can only do that if we get compelling applications for projects that bring linguistics to new audiences!
So...it might just be that most people are waiting until the day before the deadline to apply, but currently we have fewer applicants to the LingComm Grants than we have actual grants to give out
I'm just saying, your odds of getting funded are currently extremely good
probably not a coincidence that these dudes all look the same but seriously, these dudes all look identical. there's a beardy one and there's a cleanshaven one, and that's where the distinctions end.
