Huge congratulations to Poonam didi!Reaching to the CII Woman Exemplar award finalist is a testament to her innovative training skills & her one of the best ability to stay grounded while connecting with communities. Her hard work continues to be an inspiration to the entire team.
Meet Poonam | Woman Exemplar Award 2026 Finalist – Health
Married at 17, a mother of three, and widowed by 23, Poonam’s early life was shaped by loss, responsibility, and a constant struggle. Her own health suffered through closely spaced pregnancies as she raised her children alone.
When she was selected as an Accredited Social Health Activist, #ASHA, her family resisted the idea. But Poonam pushed herself to step into the world of public health. What began as a polio supervisor role in 2008 has today grown into a powerful journey of leadership.
Poonam now works at the grassroots across some of India’s most underserved regions, bridging the gap between communities and healthcare systems. As a National Master Trainer with @EkjutIndia, she has trained over 6,000 frontline health workers, equipping them to make healthcare more accessible, understandable, and trusted.
From using local stories and visual tools to simplify health education, to working with tribal communities and traditional healers, Poonam ensures that change is not imposed, but built from within.
Her work also brings nutrition closer to home, promoting low-cost nutrition gardens that help families improve their diets sustainably.
As a CII Woman Exemplar Award 2026 finalist, Poonam Kumari is not just strengthening health systems, she is reimagining them through the lens of innovative Participatory Health trainings.
To support Poonam’s vision of mobilizing communities towards better nutrition, reduced stigmas and self-reliance, write to us at [email protected] or [email protected].

Our second keynote speaker of the afternoon session, Dr. Nirmala Nair, Co-founder, @EkjutIndia, Jharkhand delivered her speech on "When Communities are Empowered, Health Improves". Inspired by Paulo Freire’s concept of critical consciousness, she emphasized 'Participatory Learning and Action' approach where women identify problems and implement co-produced solutions, citing examples from Bolivia and Nepal. Starting with a small team in 2004, her cost-effective research on reducing newborn deaths, endorsed by WHO in 2014, is now active across nine Indian states. She concluded that language is not a barrier and that all interventions should be led by women.
