Meet Shubhangi | Woman Exemplar Award 2026 Finalist – Health
Growing up in a single room in Dharavi, Shubhangi’s journey from giving up her ambition, to navigating an unsupportive marriage and raising her son as a single mother, has made her work closely with communities facing the harsh realities of urban poverty, where access to basic maternal and child healthcare is often fragmented or delayed.

Today, Shubhangi is reimagining how public health systems can work, by focusing on prevention, early risk identification, and consistent care. From counselling over 60,000 women on nutrition and self-care, to training 4,000+ frontline workers and co-developing the NuTree app for real-time growth monitoring, her approach ensures that care reaches before a crisis does.

Her work has directly impacted over 64,000 individuals and reached more than 1.2 lakh people, strengthening maternal and child health outcomes across some of Maharashtra’s most underserved communities.

As a CII Woman Exemplar Award 2026 finalist, Shubhangi is building a future where healthcare is not reactive, but preventive. A future where women are informed decision-makers, and frontline systems are equipped to respond with consistency and care.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we strengthen our resolve to promote science in schools.
CII Foundation, with the support of @KeminInd India Private Limited, has established STEM labs across eight Government Higher Secondary Schools in Gummidipoondi, Tamil Nadu.

To ensure effective use of these labs, a dedicated Training of Trainers (ToT) program was conducted for teachers, focusing on hands-on engagement with STEM models and their integration into classroom teaching.

The initiative aims to make science education more interactive, practical, and meaningful for students while strengthening educators’ capacity to deliver engaging learning experiences.

On World Wetlands Day, under the CII India Wetland Coalition, a Wetland Conservation and Restoration Project has been initiated at Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary, a Ramsar site. The project is being implemented by CII Foundation with the support of #JhajjarPowerPlant under the Amrit Dharohar Scheme. The initiative focuses on restoring ecological balance, strengthening biodiversity, and enhancing long-term conservation capacity.

The project adopts a multi-pronged approach including removal of weeds and garbage, fish stocking, plantation of native trees and strengthening on-ground monitoring.

🌟 Strengthening Health Systems, Empowering Communities | Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh
The CII Foundation initiated the Health Systems Strengthening Program in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, in collaboration with @PirojshaGodrejF and our implementing partner, @DigiSwasthya, beginning in 8 villages across Dhanapur block.

CII Foundation chose Chandauli as the focal point of its Health Systems Strengthening Program because:

- It is a designated aspirational district by NITI Aayog
- Home to 1600+ villages
- High potential for rural development

While Chandauli District has a large network of community health workers, including Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), General Nurse Midwives (GNMs) and Anganwadi Centres, there is scope for improvement.

Focused on improving maternal, child, and adolescent health, the programme works to strengthen primary healthcare delivery through community engagement, frontline worker support, school- and village-level interventions, and sustained health awareness.

Day 2: Exemplar Exchange Program – #WomanExemplarProgram
If Day 1 opened the doors to conversation, Day 2 was all about unlearning, relearning, and digging deeper into the realities of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

The day began with a detailed session on MHM, taking participants through everything we should have learned growing up—but often didn’t. Through body mapping, we collectively reflected on the lack of awareness and the many euphemisms commonly used to describe #menstruation — ‘down hona’, ‘namaz chhootna’, ‘nahaane ki hona’, ‘kapda hona’, ‘bahar ka hona’ — each loaded with silence and stigma.

We studied the evolution of menstrual products—from cloths to pads to cups—exploring not just usability but environmental cost. The harsh reality of sanitary pad waste and its long-lasting impact on the planet was a wake-up call for many. An eye-opening moment came when Basmati, one of our Exemplars, shared that in parts of rural Jharkhand, leaves are still being used as absorbents—a stark reminder of how much ground we still have to cover.

What made the session even more impactful was Jaspreet’s football session with adolescent girls, where she used sport as a tool for awareness and dialogue—proving that menstrual education can take many forms, all of them powerful.

As the day came to a close, the Exemplars sat together to formulate field-level action plans, brainstorming how they would take these learnings back to their communities.
From critical reflection to solution-building, Day 2 was as educational as it was transformative. We move forward with deeper understanding, greater empathy, and a shared commitment to making #MenstrualHealth accessible, sustainable, and stigma-free.

Day 3: Exemplar Exchange Program – Woman Exemplar Program (WEP)

After two days of immersive learning and powerful conversations around menstrual health, Day 3 marked a shift from knowledge-sharing to hands-on skill-building.

The Exemplars spent the day stitching sustainable menstrual products—including cloth pads, panty liners, and diapers—using the patterns, techniques, and learnings shared over the previous sessions. What initially seemed intricate and detail-heavy quickly turned into a rhythm of teamwork, focus, and satisfaction.

Each Exemplar completed a set of products with precision and pride, visibly enthused to take these skills and models back to their communities across India. Beyond just making the products, they discussed how they could replicate the process using local materials, engage peer groups, and initiate community-led workshops on menstrual hygiene management.

The day ended with a sense of accomplishment—not only for what they had made, but for the agency they had reclaimed and the change they were ready to lead.
