On This Day — June 3, 1948 Over half a million Arabs poured into Mandate Palestine in just 12 years to take advantage of the economic opportunities created by Jewish development — the only place in the entire Middle East with a growing Arab middle class. As I said here previously, I've been working on a theory of everything. I don't plan on publishing it in peer reviewed physics journals, present it at physics conferences, or write a trade or university press book about my theory. I'll just go on podcasts & explain it here because in such a situation, how can a self-perpetuating secular priesthood of credentialed "scientists'' purport to maintain a monopoly on the production of scientific knowledge? Let me emphasize that I am in no way opposed to specialized scientific training; I object only when an elite caste seeks to impose its canon of "high science'', with the aim of excluding a priori alternative forms of scientific production by non-members. Quantum physics, hadron bootstrap theory, complex number theory, and chaos theory share the basic assumption that reality cannot be described in linear terms, that nonlinear—and unsolvable—equations are the only means possible to describe a complex, chaotic, and non-deterministic reality. These theories are all metacritical in the sense that they foreground themselves as metaphors rather than as "accurate" descriptions of reality. We might say that these attempts by scientists to develop new strategies of description represent notes towards a theory of theories, of how representation—mathematical, experimental, and verbal—is inherently complex and problematizing, not a solution but part of the semiotics of investigating the universe. Finally, postmodern science provides a powerful refutation of the authoritarianism and elitism inherent in traditional science, as well as an empirical basis for a democratic approach to scientific work. For, as Bohr noted, "a complete elucidation of one and the same object may require diverse points of view which defy a unique description''—this is quite simply a fact about the world, much as the self-proclaimed empiricists of modernist science might prefer to deny it.

There’s no doubt that Israel’s war in Gaza was not genocide. It is the least likely urban conflict in modern history to meet the standard legal definition of genocide. And you don't have to take my word for it. Take the word of the High Level Military Group, the HLMG, which is a collection of all the of high level officers and generals from almost all the Western democracies in the world, not just the United States. These people aren't Jews. They have no connection with Israel. They're just generals in militaries around the world. They wrote a report and a brief to the International Criminal Court, the ICC, saying that Israel’s civilian warning system is completely unlike anything any other country has ever been willing to do for the civilian population of an enemy in wartime. Under this system, Israel tells the civilian population of Gaza exactly where it will be striking the next day and then provides humanitarian corridors for them to leave those zones. They also say it is something our own democracies would never be able to do, because our civilian populations would never stomach endangering the lives of our own soldiers by warning the enemy where our sons and daughters will be. Israel's unprecedented efforts to protect the lives of civilians in Gaza has taken a very heavy toll on the IDF. Over 800 Israelis have been killed in Gaza precisely because they warned the civilian population to get out of harm's way.

@liron @paulg @paulg is an antisemite, and I don't use that term lightly. I unfollowed him years ago after reading his tweets every time the subject of Israel comes up. It's not something that can reasonably be explained with just support for the Palestinian cause.

Sam Harris has triggered the hell out of Hamas supporters online by simply explaining a basic fact: The Muslim terrorists who initiated a war against Israel on October 7 are facing the consequences of that war, not a genocide. They invaded Israel shouting “Allah Akbar”, raped, murdered and burned over 1,000 Jews as Islamic acts of worship, and kidnapped hundreds more into Gaza. They filmed their own atrocities with pride. היום תצביע הכנסת על החוק לתיקון חוק השמירה על מקומות קדושים כך ש"חילול" מקום קדוש ייחשב כל מעשה שעומד בניגוד להנחיות הרבנות הראשית. מטרת החוק היא למנוע תפילה לא-אורתודוקסית בכותל, והעונש על "חילול" הוא עד 7 שנות מאסר בפועל. כל תפילה ללא מחיצה, כל התעטפות בטלית על ידי אישה, כל קריאה בתורה על ידי אישה, כל לבוש לא "צנוע" או כל התנהגות ששני הרבנים הראשיים יחליטו שהיא לא קבילה - תיחשב לעבירה פלילית שדינה עד שבע שנות מאסר. אי אפשר להיות יותר ברור מזה: הממשלה הנוכחית מעלה חוק שיכניס יהודים לכלא מפני שלא נהגו על פי ההלכה האורתודוקסית. רמיסת הזכות לחופש הדת והמצפון וכפייה דתית במובן הבוטה ביותר. מדינת ישראל מפסיקה להיות מסגרת שמאפשרת ליהודים שונים לחיות יחד, והופכת למכשיר אכיפה של זרם יהודי אחד על כל השאר. לא, החוק הזה הוא לא "הטרלה". מי שהציע אותו הוא אבי מעוז, נציג הרב טאו בכנסת. הוא לא צוחק, הרב שלו לא צוחק, ובכלל החרד"ל רציניים מאוד בכוונתם להפוך את ישראל לתיאוקרטיה. אם היו יכולים, זה היה קורה היום. ביום שיהיה להם מספיק כוח - זה יקרה. זה גם לא משנה אם החוק לא יעבור. אם הפרלמנט הפולני היה מצביע על חוק שאוסר תפילה יהודית היתה לכך משמעות עצומה, גם אם הוא לא היה עובר. היינו מבינים שמשהו מאוד לא בסדר בפולין. אם הממשלה הבלגית היתה מציעה חוק שאוסר על ברית מילה והפרלמנט היה מפיל אותו היינו מבינים שמשהו רע מאוד קורה בבלגיה. גם חוקים שלא עוברים משנים את המרחב הפוליטי. הם מסמנים מה נחשב סביר לדיון, אילו זכויות כבר אינן מובנות מאליהן, איזה חזון של מדינה ממתין להזדמנות פוליטית מתאימה. הכנסת היום תצביע על הפיכת ההלכה האורתודוקסית לחוק פלילי. עוד שלב בדרך למשטר הלכתי שלא יאפשר לכל מי שאינו גבר יהודי אורתודוקסי הטרוסקסואל שוויון לפני החוק וזכויות יסוד. אנחנו נאבקים על הזכויות הבסיסיות ביותר שלנו.
