Sometimes it’s hard to read between the lines with Paraguayans. They’re much more indirect than Central and especially Eastern Europeans. They try to please you even when they know they can’t deliver, or they agree just to keep things pleasant. Saying “no” is kind of culturally avoided here because it’s seen as impolite, so Paraguayans almost always say yes. Then you have to figure out what they actually meant from how they said it.
I’ve lost count of how many times a plumber or electrician told me “I’ll come tomorrow morning” and then didn’t show up at the agreed time. Not because they’re lazy (they’re really hardworking) but because saying no or admitting they can’t make it feels impolite.
People like me, who were raised to value direct communication and honesty, struggle with this a lot. When I talk the way I’m used to, locals often see me as rude - even though there’s no bad intention, just straightforward honesty they’re not used to.
After three years I’m getting better at adjusting, but man, it’s still challenging...

when you see an “expert” in the media talk about a topic you’re quite familiar with, it really makes you question all their other “experts” for all the other topics
