There is this man called SEGUN, he loves going to different car stand in ibadan especially akala express just to make enquiries about cars and spend time with car dealers trying to learn one or two things. In the evening most at every beer parlor he will always rant about car prices.

“These importers are thieves!” he will shout. “How can one 2008 Camry cost 9 million naira? Customs duty, clearing fees, dollar exchange na scam! The government and car dealers are killing us small men. Me? I go import myself one day and sell cheap to my people!”

His friends would nod, buy him another round, and laugh. Segun became the voice of the suffering car buyer. He will comment on every car post on TikTok and Instagram “Stop the madness! Cars no dey cost like this for abroad!”

Then one month, Segun disappeared from the parlours. He had finally done it. With his savings, connections at the port, and plenty of “egunje” for the boys in uniform, he imported a sleek 2008 Toyota Camry from USA. The car arrived shining like a new wife on her wedding day low mileage, full options, no faults.
Segun spent two weeks polishing it, taking glossy photos from every angle, and calculating his costs. Duties, shipping, fuel for trips to the port, “facilitation” money, workshop detailing… it all added up.

When his friends asked about the car, Segun smiled proudly. “This one na clean machine. I go sell am for 10 million.”
His best friend, Dele, nearly choked on his drink. “Bros, you dey joke? You wey dey rant every day say car too costly? Now you wan sell your own for 10 million? Wetin happened to ‘sell cheap to the people’?”

Segun shrugged, adjusting his designer sunglasses. “My brother, you no understand. This one is my car. I suffered to bring am. The market price na market price. If you want cheap, go buy from those thieves wey I dey curse before. This one get my sweat and blood inside.”

The group fell silent for a moment, then burst into laughter. Segun joined them, laughing the loudest. Deep down, he knew the truth: complaining about high prices was easy when you weren’t the one paying the duties, clearing the container, and staring at your bank balance.

For two months he didn’t see single buyer, whenever someone complained about car prices around him , Segun would just smile quietly and say, “Life na teacher.”

For these reasons it’s hard to sell the ones they have in stock.

RIVERS YOUTH FOUND 18 YEARS AFTER DISAPPEARANCE

Gospel Kinanee, at 14 years old, left home one night and never returned. His family says their search for him took them to police stations, but to no avail.

His brother says the correctional centre where he has now been found was visited twice during the search.

With no formal trial or access to legal representation, the young Ogoni man, who went missing in 2007, was one of 21 inmates released from the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre when the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, flagged off the Rivers State Jail Delivery Exercise.

His family named him Gospel Kinanee, but the correctional centre has him in its records as Baridi Sunday.

Gospel Kinanee's mental health is now the subject of litigation.
