On this day, August 3, 1986, 🇵🇱🇨🇿 Wojciech Wróz, Przemysław Piasecki, and Petr Božik stood atop K2 (8,611 m) via the Magic Line.

A pure, knife-edged ridge on the south-southwest pillar, one of the most dangerous routes on the mountain.

They began quietly on June 22. Logistics delayed them, and the 1986 K2 season was already cursed with avalanches, crevasses, and death. Americans Alan Pennington and John Smolich perished on the same line. Italian soloist Renato Casarotto died retreating. But the Polish-Slovak team moved upward.

Camp I at 6,300 m.
Camp II at 6,900 m.
Camp III at 7,400 m below a hanging glacier.

The upper wall was savage: 60° ice, mixed rock steps, a thin ridge above 8,500 m. On August 1, the three men bivouacked at 8,000 m. Then again at 8,400 m. No oxygen. No margin.

August 3, 6:00 PM, they reached the summit.

🗻 The route has seen only a handful of attempts since.

They embraced but daylight was gone. The Magic Line was too steep to reverse, so they traversed to the Abruzzi Ridge, rappelling by the dim glow of a single strong headlamp.

At 11:30 PM, in the notorious Bottleneck at 8,100 m, tragedy struck. Wojciech Wróz fell into the darkness. A one-meter gap in the fixed ropes may have been the cause. They called his name, waited, prayed. He never came.

The survivors descended through storm and whiteout. Frostbite. Hemorrhaged eyes. No strength left. Days later, they reached Base Camp, achieving the first traverse of the mountain, but there was no celebration.

They soon learned another teammate, Dobrosława "Mrówka" Miodowicz-Wolf, who joined Alan Rouse’s group on the Abruzzi, was missing, lost forever in the storm.

The Magic Line was climbed, but at a devastating cost.

Even now, few dare to attempt it. Fewer succeed. The Magic Line remains one of K2’s greatest and most dangerous challenges.

Because on K2, the mountain lets you choose: glory or life. Rarely both.
