As a native to our region who grew up reading the Washington Post, the decline and fall of this once-great, storied institution has been chilling to watch. Today's news from the Post about further plans to demolish 300 jobs in local and regional news reporting, international reporting, and sports and arts coverage makes me feel like the essential newspaper of my life and my community has just been hit by a wrecking ball—kind of like the White House and the Kennedy Center.

I know that the Post Guild and Tech Guild, which represent Washington Post employees and have always upheld the highest standards of journalistic excellence, are fighting to preserve the newspaper and save its besieged workforce. I certainly support them in their quest.

But if current ownership is determined to turn the newspaper into a pale shadow of what it once was, my friend Congressman Don Beyer (VA-8) from across the Potomac River has written a powerful statement calling on Jeff Bezos to sell the newspaper rather than strip off its pieces and drive it into the ground. This is a call that millions of people would endorse.

The National Capital City of the United States and a great and powerful metropolitan region deserve a great and joyful newspaper. There may be buyers out there willing to invest in this great American community. Nobody should be betting against the people of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., who have been in the forefront of the movement to defend strong democracy and freedom to oppose authoritarianism in society and corruption in government.

Let us embrace the reporters, journalists, cartoonists, artists, illustrators, editors and technical workers who made the Post such a celebrated institution and work for solutions that will bring back institutional strength and energy to the freedom of speech and the freedom of press.

The press are not "the enemy of the people," as President Trump and other authoritarians have always argued, but the people's best friend. We must defend the press against the current onslaught.

As Thomas Jefferson once said: "If you were to ask me whether I would prefer a government without a newspaper or a newspaper without a government, I would not hesitate a moment to choose the latter.

A statement from the family of Alex Pretti, obtained by CNN:

"We are heartbroken but also very angry.

Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.

The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.

Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you."
