@kylamferry I agree! Lots of people view SM as a distraction/leisure thing but really it is just like any other corporations- there are intricate and intentional algorithms/ads etc that are shown to us bc the platforms have something to gain, it’s not just a casual activity for us to access
@Katheri52612252 I also found the concept of being addicted to social media really interesting. When people compare it to drugs or alcohol it sounds really extreme, but after doing research for this class there were actually a lot of valid similarities that I’d never thought about.
@DravenJDavid This was the main thing that stood out to me from when we watched The Social Dilemma. It’s interesting to think that we are a “product” because we are motivating the supply and demand for social media developers/ads/algorithms etc.
#450SocialSP24 the main thing I will take away from this class is the concept of affordances. It’s important to understand what “needs” we think social media can fulfill for us, and why we think that. It’s an interesting psychological perspective on the subject of social media.
@baileeo01 You make a great point in saying that soc media is supplemental in activism rather than the only tool needed to make a change. In the last few years, this can be seen in social media movements that coincide with social activism/change/discussions (BLM,COVID,& Roe V Wade protests)
In Baym's article, they said that selfies can be used as a way to empower people and gain confidence. I agree but I think sometimes people share selfies to seek validation that they rely on for their self worth, which was mentioned here: https://t.co/56lkKaW8ws #450SocialSP24
@baileeo01 I've never thought about comparing what nostalgic things grandparents/parents share with us versus what we might show our kids/grandkids. Will we just show them screenshots instead of letters? Will it be as meaningful?#450SocialSP24
Baym discusses the importance of in-person communication when establishing relationships. Most "asynchronous" communication (ex. social media) excludes at least one of the senses. Without engaging our senses during communication, the connection is not as strong.#450SocialSP24
