@ahleighjohnson I had never thought about the affordances social media provides until this class. I find them so interesting and how they are unique to each person. Which can lead to misconceptions in communication online sometimes.

Gladwell talks about activism having strong ties and soc media having weak times. I do agree with this. A community fighting for safe drinking water will have a deeper connection & are more likely to take action. Social media is needed in activism, but not alone. #450SocialSP24

@kylamferry I’ve never really thought about ideologies on social media before till this weekend readings. I have people who get mad I text instead of calling them and then I’m mad because they want me to call them. I now have a different perspective on this because we all have ideologies.

I didn’t know you could put a dating ad in the newspaper before the digital age. Online dating isn’t a new idea to society. It has evolved with media. While things like 90 day fiancé are CRAZY, it is amazing people can make meaningful connections with people from different places

@hieuegnew The readings labeled “lurkers” as a positive contribution to the community when decided to chime in. However, on other platforms today, lurkers aren’t seen as positive. They are usually the ones who stalk regularly just to check in to see what other people are doing.

@mikecling I also thought the cafe was a physical place at first. This story is so cool! They built an online community that changed lives. I lived in a town of 900 total ppl in the middle of nowhere. It was hard to find a group of people to fit in with.

@Katheri52612252 I do agree that we spend more time online, but I have to argue that I don’t necessarily think that is the reason we know less of our neighbors. Social media has been proven to keep us connected with our family, friends, and romantic relationships.

Sharing our “authentic” self’s on media is a double edged sword. Being viewed as authentic or inauthentic depends on the definition imposed by the person doing the judging. In other words, who cares what others think about you and what you’re posting. #450SocialSP24
