@AshleeBleier I agree with this, social media has become such a great tool for a variety of things in our lives. Another thing I took away from this course that connects to this is that it is not necessarily a bad or good thing, it is just a part of our lives. #450SocialSP24
@maebl8kman I thought this idea was a great way to end the textbook & class. Although everything we learned will help a lot in our life and career, it is super important to remember that it is not really negatively or positively effecting us and is just a part of our world. #450SocialSP24
@baileeo01 I agree with this! Sometimes it is hard to be your authentic self with the pressure of today's society, but in the long run it will better help you with both online and in person connections. #450SocialSP24
My biggest takeaway from this class was the idea of affordances. It is super interesting how each individual social media platform has so many of its own affordances and how each individual person using them all differently. #450SocialSP24
In one of the articles for this week, it discussed how social media platforms are built on weak ties and activism are strong ties in terms of taking action and making change. Would you agree or disagree with this? Why? #450SocialSP24
@nathanielhoeye This is a great point. In today's society there is a pressure to 'follow the trends' and I think that concept can be put into place with the idea of media ideologies. Everyone wants to be up to date with the newest trends to stay relevant. #450SocialSP24
@maebl8kman I agree with this as well! If I have just met someone (online or in person) I am most likely only going to be communicating with them on 1 platform. But, if I have known someone for an extended period of time, I will be communicating on several different platforms. #450SocialSP24
@GudGradesAlways I found this post insightful and interesting. At the beginning of this week's readings I didn't fully understand what idioms of practice were but with discussion in class I got the concept. This post also provided an example that furthered my understanding of it. #450SocialSP24
A quote that stuck with me from the documentary was "we weren't evolved to need social approval every 5 seconds." I thought this was interesting to think about because growing up with social media has caused us to crave that social approval from others. #450SocialSP24
@nathanielhoeye I love the way you phrased this, I think it really shows what the online community is for. I think initially people join for the community, but after awhile it becomes more for the people within it. #450SocialSP24
@mikecling I also thought they same thing at the beginning of the research paper. But, as I kept reading I was more amazed at how 'real' they made the online community. Being able to connect with people like this online is such a cool thing. #450SocialSP24
@AshleeBleier This also stood out to me as interesting. Personally, I am not a part of any but I think that they are a really beneficial place for people to connect on things that they may not be able to with people in person. #450SocialSP24
Baym discussed social cues in both f2f and online communication. It got me to think about how these can affect communication on FaceTime or Zoom. Because, you are able to see the person but it is still online. What social cues are you seeing and not seeing? #450SocialSP24
@GudGradesAlways This was such a good question and analysis from the articles that really got me thinking about the bigger impact and use of selfies. I think it has it's good and bad aspects to it but ultimately it is up to each person I think. #450SocialSP24
@AshleeBleier This was an interesting and informative article to read and it connected great with the articles this week! Thinking about what we post on the internet and the footprint we leave behind is very important in today's society. #450SocialSP24
@maebl8kman Like with every new media/technology selfies will continue to evolve and change, but I do believe that they will still be around in some capacity. This is because, as you said, they are a record of our lives. In the future, they can serve as sort of a time capsule. #450SocialSP24
In chapter 2, Baym discussed new things that come with new media. One example given was how media is showing “modern-day fairy tales that serve as cultural referents for understanding online romance” as well as A.I. A more recent example I found was the movie Jexi. #450SocialSP24
