@Alissas2003#450SocialSP24 I totally agree. The social dilemma documentary touched on this, and how algorithms can negatively affect us. But like you said, algorithms are ingrained in our lives! We need to learn how to coexist with them and use them positively, for ex. in our workplaces
@ahleighjohnson#450SocialSP24 It's been interesting to work on our workshops and specific demographics. What affordances will social media offer us as we age? As we become parents? As our friends move away? There's a lot to think about.
@KelYamada I totally agree! Now that these technologies are here, they're not going away, so we need to learn how to communicate effectively through them. It's important to remember the ways in which social media can be used positively, in order to reap the benefits. #450SocialSP24
#450SocialSP24 I had quite a few aha moments in this class, but a huge takeaway for me was about how social media as a medium isn't inherently good or bad, it's just another medium in which we communicate. I learned a lot about the positives of social media.
@NicoShiverick#450SocialSP24 I researched studies for our group project & found that ppl who viewed social media in a positive light actually reaped the benefits of it much more than ppl who had negative views of social media. social media can work positively w already existing communication!
@jenkinsjazzy7#450SocialSP24 I think Baym raised some interesting points about how social media isn't inherently bad, it's just another form of communication, but I do think social media has been developed to be addictive and have negative qualities and corporations take advantage.
@baileeo01#450SocialSP24 Social media can be great tool for activism, but there needs to be real life action too! Media can be a great, fast way to raise awareness in our digital age for sure.
This week we read about social media's role in our relationships. Ch. 6 noted that many close relationships are characterized by "media multiplexity". This is very true in my life; the closer the friend, the more social media platforms I have them on!
@jenkinsjazzy7#450SocialSP24 I think anonymity online always frees us to be more honest! Baym also talked about social order and social norms... we don't have to worry about those if we're anonymous! Users also will feel free to self-represent however they please, usually their ideal self.
@Alissas2003#450SocialSP24 It's a little scary to think about the possibilities of tech addiction! The social dilemma got me thinking about the unconscious behaviors i've adopted because of algorithms on social media.
@kenvillegas16#450SocialSP24 It was interesting to read about how new media can contribute to honesty! Baym noted that the ideals we consider important IRL (trust, honesty, and commitment) are equally as important online! We consume a lot of fearful messages about online relationships.
#450SocialSP24 I really enjoyed this week's reading about the Lesbian Cafe. I hope that we can move forward on social media and create more positive, supportive, creative spaces that facilitate connection. maybe SNS can help you find your people!
@kenvillegas16#450SocialSP24 true! It's important to remember that nowadays, jobs and even colleges will take a look at your digital footprint, though it's easy to feel safe or anonymous. Sometimes it's just not worth it to post everything online! https://t.co/3l1uGqFjak
@baileeo01 Some people might say that oversharing in itself is inauthentic, or just trying to gain sympathy or attention. I think as long as you're being ethical and sticking to your morals, you can figure out what you personally feel comfortable posting! #450SocialSP24
@elllajacobson@Cmoore1970#450SocialSP24 I don't know if anything can ever reallly replace f2f nonverbal communication, but this trend mostly stemming from reddit can show nonverbal cues in a pretty straightforward way, by using cues called "tone indicators" https://t.co/qF8VoXhKhn
Saltz talks about how "in a
hundred years, the mass of selfies will be an incredible record of the fine details of everyday life." I wonder if selfies will always be around? Will we always use them in the same way? Will their "third meanings" change with SNS? #450socialSP24
I was reminded of Wacom's use of AI art in recent ads. They're receiving a lot of backlash, as a creative company. https://t.co/EQkpvoA6QG . Social media has been a big catalyst in this backlash. #450SocialSP24
#450SocialSP24 In chapter 1, Baym talked about how new technologies can affect our worldview. Is AI affecting our worldview? As it develops- will it continue to affect our worldview? Will AI change the way we communicate and connect with another?
