@ahleighjohnson Affordances was a very strong aspect of this class that can be applied to almost every part of life. And it clears up a lot of space for the reasons why we use social media #450SocialSP24
@KelYamada This is a very cool takeaway. I think that the reality is that social media has more positive impacts than negative and it leads to a change in society.
@DravenJDavid This was one of my other large takeaways. Especially the idea that the only industries that call their people "users" are drug addicts and social media users #450SocialSP24
Throughout the semester we have learned a ton about different social media methods and theories. My largest takeaway from the class is the different online spaces that be created and the roles that individuals take in those spaces. #450SocialSP24
@zachwhite2111@Cmoore1970 I believe we can see both strong and weak ties in both social media and real life connections. Even in areas where those ties should be strong, like politics, wherein most people don't know their local electives even though the connection should be stronger there.
@Alissas2003 I believe that the use of social media can not only benefit activism and action but also lead to a larger group forming and acting. This can be seen in events being seen and shared world wide!
@baileeo01 I think you make a great point talking about the importance of connection with activism. On the other side, there are large online communities that also are able to save TV shows because of how powerful they can be together based off their love for that show #450SocialSP24
Based off the article "Fifty Ways to leave your lover", they state at the end that people's media ideologies change based off exposure to new mediums to communicate through. But, society also has to pressure an individual's media ideology as well. #450SocialSP24
@kenvillegas16 Kendall, the comparison Baym makes is very insightful. I think it is because we believe that the screen we hide behind is some sort of protection, even though it offers no protection at all, possibly even less than in real life #450SocialSP24
@elllajacobson When we can change how we present ourselves online, it can either increase or decrease our connectedness with the reality around us. There are both people who can play both sides well. This could negatively impact our self identity #405SocialSP24
@ahleighjohnson I believe that there is a large amount of pressure put onto kids these days as well that everyone needs to have phones and social media. And there isn't enough individuals telling them differently, and it adds to the stress of social approval as well #450SocialSP24
The enthongraphy of the electronic bar brought up a very interesting perspective of how vital it is to create a space. My belief is that the people matter more than the space, but maybe it is a tandem of both aspects working together. Creating a space is important #450SocialSP24
@ahleighjohnson Hello Ashleigh, I think that the most impactful social cues that you are missing out over zoom and FT are the nonverbals from the shoulders down. Since on zoom most of the time you can only see their face, it is hard to see how their posture or hands are moving. #450SocialSP24
@KaylaS58562 Hello Kayla, I really thought that this concept was interesting. I never find myself posting different things to other people but I do find myself hiding certain aspects of my life and not posting it at all. Which isn't really authentic at all. #450SocialSP24
@kenvillegas16 Hello Kendall, I think it is important to highlight this and as we continue to develop technology it will become more vital to understand how our digital footprint could affect us. #450SocialSP24
In Baym and Senft's article, they state that selfies "facilitate flows and debates around meaning, affect, and representation in easily digestible bits". My thought process was why is it that selfies became so popular when we have access to video in an instant? #450SocialSP24
@kenvillegas16@Cmoore1970 Kendall, I find the quote just as interesting since often times there are people who believe that getting rid of all media will leave them less stressful, even though without social media, there might be even more social anxiety than before.
Baym discusses the idea that people are physically present but not mentally and emotionally present. This can be compared to the lack of mindfulness in today’s society, and it is rare that we find people off their phones and with the people around them. #450SocialSP24
