Not often I get to take a picture with the original Dr. Howard! Had a great time at the @WesleyBiblical graduation with my family. The new painting of their founders (including my grandpa) was so lovely!
Insider tip for #aarsbl25 participants: Tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm until late, we’re meeting at the CitizenM Back Bay hotel bar on the second floor - plenty of space and low noise. The unofficial SBL gathering for anyone interested in the Roman Empire and Early Christianity will convene. Everyone is very welcome - bring friends.

Thoroughly enjoyed the engaging presentation on the parable of the vineyard workers from Craig Bloomberg with a fascinating conclusion regarding whether there are levels of reward in heaven! #ETS2025
LMU Theologian @ChristophHeilig has edited the anthology “Empire Criticism of the New Testament,” which provides a fundamentally new reassessment of the relationship between early #Christianity and the Roman Empire. https://t.co/GPiZ58g9po
Eusebius on the Council of Nicaea: “For those who were furthest separated from each other, not only in spirit, but in physical presence and territories and places and provinces, were brought together, and one city received them” So… #AARSBL2025?
🚨 Just published! 🎉
Thrilled to announce Empire Criticism of the New Testament, a volume (with cutting-edge research, but also suitable as a textbook!) I had the pleasure of editing, is now out - and available open access via @mohrsiebeck! 🥳

Narrative technique? Verbal aspect? The Gospel of Mark? What more could I want in a single paper? Just enjoyed a wonderful presentation on the use of the historical present λέγει in the #SNTS2025 Presidential address from Cilliers Breytenbach!
New review of "Paul the Storyteller" (published by @eerdmansbooks) in JTS by Wesley Thomas Davey. It concludes: "Paul the Storyteller is a must-read volume for those invested in Pauline studies".
I also like this line: "Heilig’s analysis not only constitutes a formidable defence of the legitimacy of implicit narratives in Paul, but his ressourcement of narratology to make his case circumvents the theological confict zones that have encumbered the discipline and opens a fresh line of inquiry for it to move forward".
In fact, I even like the points where the reviewer points out the limitations of the book. Because he gets what I wanted and did not want to achieve. Great review, from my perspective!

Had an absolutely wonderful time at the Inklings Fellowship in Oxford this week! So great to catch up with old friends including Dr. Hal Poe, one of my first Bible professors! You can either thank or blame him for my teaching style today!
I am very much looking forward to co-hosting this event at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities on June 26. I will also present insights from my own research on narration, funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria (@researchbavaria). @Julian65236559, professor for digital literary studies, will likewise contribute.
The event was made possible by @LMU_Muenchen's funds from the University of Excellence program (@dfg_public), which supports collaborations between LMU and @UCBerkeley. We look forward to welcoming our guests from UC Berkeley, including @ninabegus - the co-applicant of this grant - and @begusgasper!
Places are very limited since this is conceptualized as an interdisciplinary gathering that allows for discussion in an intimate setting. If you are interested in participating, I encourage you to send me an email soon!
In the evening, we will go out for dinner together.
