My 4-year journey of "blood sweat tears" at SBMI came to a close with our graduation ceremony. A truly amazing journey with inspiring people. It was a fantastic Friday having lunch at a Chinese restaurant with Dr. Roberts & labmates, and meeting SBMI faculties at the ceremony!
On Friday I got to hood my first PhD student, Yuqi Si (@elmayuqi) with fellow committee members Elmer Bernstam and Xiaoqian Jiang.
Congrats Dr. Si!! Well-deserved honor after a tremendously productive time in graduate school.
@yanshan_wang@kirk_roberts Thank you Dr. Wang. I'm currently working at Pieces Tech, with some of colleagues you may know, Majid, Yukun, etc. Really appreciate your good bless!
@nicktatonetti @kirk_roberts Thank you Dr. Tatonetti! I still remember your course is exactly the fundamental guide of my biomedical informatics journey!
@TMills@kirk_roberts Thank you Dr. Miller! Aha I clearly remember they shouted out your name, and I personally give a big shout-out to you along my PhD journey!
Super proud of my PhD student, Yuqi Si (@elmayuqi), who successfully defended her dissertation today. One couldn't ask for a better person as their first PhD student. Made me look like a competent advisor!
If you are interested in #ClinicalNLP, please vote for our workshop on the subject.
Voting is very important in the decision-making for which workshops are selected for ACL/NAACL/EMNLP/COLING. We would love to have a ClinicalNLP 2022 workshop!!

I was pleased to be on Yuqi's committee, she was an incredibly productive PhD student! Expecting and looking forward to great things from her in the future.
Register for the #JAMIA journal club webinar on June 10 at 3 pm ET. Tune in and watch Robert Cronin of @OhioStateMed discuss his paper comparing family health history in surveys vs. EHR data mapped to the data model in the @AllofUsResearch program.

Join us for the #JAMIA Journal Club webinar on 5/13 at 3 pm ET. Lead author Santiago Romero-Brufau of @MayoClinic and @HarvardChanSPH will discuss the use of machine learning to improve the accuracy of patient deterioration predictions. Register today! https://t.co/MmwsfpOv2l
Thanks Dr. Roberts and Dr. Bernstam for all the valuable feedback and efforts on this work! Hope this will be a starting point for future NLP-based phenotyping, especially for low-prevalence phenotypes.
A 🧵 on our recent JBI paper. Our goal is to improve NLP-based phenotyping for relatively rare conditions (i.e., not “big data”) via transfer learning.
Yuqi Si (@elmayuqi) is first author and deserves 99% of the credit.

In our new JAMIA paper, we evaluate clinical concept extraction with new embedding methods (ELMo/BERT) against traditional embeddings. The result is that--surprise--BERT wins on 4 of the most popular concept extraction datasets. @AMIAinformatics@elmayuqi https://t.co/NgmV5f4iTR
It’s here! Do you want to use #rstats to analyze clinical data and improve the health of future patients? Excited to launch the #ClinicalDataScience Specialization on @coursera from @CUAnschutz and Industry Partner @googlecloud https://t.co/Je3rllEs70
