Ideation phase: Enzo Maresca (Part 3: Final-phase)
After playing through midfield, and reaching the opposition box, the structure would be a 1-3-3-3 to occupy all the vertical channels possible and stretch the opposition defense while creating a positional framework for intense counter-pressing.
- Khusanov as the stopper, marshalled by Nico Gonzalez just ahead of him, flanked by Gvardiol on the left and Nunes on the right, either would have the licence to make a move further to initiate an all-out attack through a partial break of the structure.
- Anderson tilts towards the centre as Nico O'Reilly occupies that left-sided advanced-midfield zone, complement Jeremy Doku or crashing the box.
- Cherki sticks around the inside-right channel with a free role on the entirety of the right-side of the pitch, and coordinates with Nunes (who would have partial license to underlap, most probably) and Semenyo.
The key to maintaining the structure would be that at any moment, only one of Nunes or Gvardiol would be allowed to move forward and break their line.
As one of the two breaks forward, Khusanov shifts to fill the hole, Gonzalez drops deeper through the centre and the other flanking-defender stays back to create a protective back-3. We have to (and under Maresca, would be) pragmatic even when going on an all-out attack.
- Upon failure to attack or loss of possession, I would like to apply the "6-second rule" that Pep Guardiola had at Barcelona, when the players were instructed to press aggressively for 6 seconds and then fall back into their defensive shape, which in our case could be a 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.
🚨 Dani Alves on facing Cristiano Ronaldo in Madrid:
🗣️ “No one in Barcelona ever liked him, both the club, players management. It wasn’t because of Messi or the rivalry, it was because of the damage he could do in just one moment.”
🗣️ “The worst feeling back then was losing the ball and seeing Real Madrid break with Cristiano involved. Once he had space, you knew you were in trouble. He was too direct, too powerful and too ruthless. You could defend perfectly for eighty minutes and he’d still find a way to punish you.”
🗣️ “It’s difficult to admit but there were moments when you looked at him and thought, ‘Imagine having that kind of beast on your side.’ Every team wants a striker with that mentality, that aggression and that hunger to decide games.”
🗣️ “Rivalries make you dislike players, but they also make you respect them. Cristiano was one of those players you hated facing, because you knew one mistake was enough for him to change the entire game.”
Can you play with two strikers and a #10 without compromising wide play or defensive stability?
Enter the 4-1-3-2. This structure allows you to:
Maintain 4 at the back for optimal Restverteidigung and initial build-up.
Pin opposition CBs with a dual-striker partnership.
Create central overloads through the #10 in the half-spaces.
Sustain width via aggressive wide midfielders/fullbacks.
Maximum central presence without losing pitch coverage.

Bayern's board and sporting directors are probably having a good laugh at the transfer window chaos. Their key business is already done, the focus is on outgoings, and the squad heading into the new season looks like this.
I'm not saying it couldn't be strengthened, but until Zaragoza, Palhinha and Boey are sold, I don't see another signing happening. Nor is there any urgent need. The squad isn't perfect, but it's also not in a position where Bayern are forced into another investment.
