@bobsyshambs They all seem to have amnesia too. Every world cup, England fans moan beforehand, then we draw a game we should've won, then the last group game is suddenly important, then we beat someone like Peru in the next round, then we think we're gonna win it, then we get knocked out.
@JimGB1989@SeanDOlfc When exactly should teams have won trophies for them to be relevant, if City and Chelsea's are too recent and Arsenal Liverpool's are too old? (And City won the FA cup in 1904 and the league in 1937 btw, and both again in the 60s)
@PrissyMissyyo@iKillCuriosity You might have your family links to Arsenal (who are hardly the least successful club) but it's clearly a big factor for most.
@PrissyMissyyo@iKillCuriosity I've no doubt the passion is there. I've got Irish cousins who are big United fans but they would admit it's cos their dad liked George Best or cos they won loads in the 90s. My point that is that for a lot of English fans, it runs quite deep and has nothing to do with success...
@retireddon_tm@iKillCuriosity ...talent is so concentrated in the prem and a few other giant clubs. Meanwhile, smaller clubs that have existed for over 100 years are going under because people are obsessed with watching these giants on TV rather than going to games.
@retireddon_tm@iKillCuriosity I think it would be a lot healthier for the global game if people put their resources into their own local teams. I don't think it's good at all that wages and tickets are so inflated. A team like Ajax, or even the big Italian clubs, are massive outsiders to win the CL because...
@PrissyMissyyo@iKillCuriosity I think you're underestimating the family connections and the cultural and community importance these clubs have. You just pick your favourite colour or the team that won something when you were young. You're very welcome to, and I'm sure it means a lot, but it's not the same.
@retireddon_tm@iKillCuriosity Feel free to pick a favourite, buy the shirt, wake up at 3am to watch, but acknowledge that these clubs are very much community institutions very closely tied to their local area. Claiming as much connection to them as us does rub us up the wrong way a bit.
@PrissyMissyyo@iKillCuriosity I can understand liking a team from another country when your own league or local team isn't great but I can't get my head round how you generate that connection. In Manchester you are pretty much born red or a blue, even if you don't like football.
