"Ten Old Salt" with the ship's cat aboard USS Hartford in 1877. The man with the violin is the ship's schoolmaster, who was responsible for instructing the crew in reading, writing, and arithmetic. The Navy later banned cats on ships because of stricter quarantine laws and dropped schoolmasters because they had a reputation for frequently being drunk.
