📢 EXCITING NEWS FROM THE DARLINGTON NURSING UNION!
We are delighted to announce that we are now opening our membership to retired healthcare professionals! 🏥
We recognise that retirement does not mean the end of your passion for healthcare, professional integrity or standing up for what is right.💪🏻
Many retired healthcare professionals have dedicated decades of their lives to caring for others, and their experience, wisdom and voices remain incredibly valuable.🙌🏻
🌟 We warmly welcome those who wish to stand alongside us in support, solidarity and affiliation as we continue to grow the Darlington Nursing Union.🌟
Whether you are currently practising or enjoying a well-earned retirement, there is a place for you within our growing community.
💜 Together, we can make a difference.
Likewise. And I had this thought too. There is some sort of commonality between the rape denial on October 7th and the biology denial of trans rights activism.
Ofc, others would argue that we are 'genocide deniers'. But this is odd. I don't deny that many thousands of Gazans have died. There's a difference between denying facts and questioning the description of those facts.
Dawkins can say whatever he likes. I'm not handing out licenses, and would oppose any restrictions on this sort of comment, here or elsewhere. I don't agree with his phrasing, and I think it crosses a line between criticism and insult. I'm in favour of the first and against the second.
This is openly, and I guess unabashedly, transphobic. Objecting to the excesses of transactivism does not license one to call trans people, even those who don't suffer from gender dysphoria, "deluded freaks". Those who call themselves gender critical or sex realist should be the first ones to condemn this despicable language.
I accept that my phrasing conveys the idea that we are putting individuals in boxes, and that's not what I meant. But, I still think that most informed lefties would assent to the claim that there's a quadrant (however they describe it) and that two quarters of the quadrant are more popular than the other two. This is what 'commonalities' means, I reckon. So I think there's enought to be going on with. It's not - I agreee - the clearest of thinking, since we're saying (to eg, much of the corbynite left) 'Yes, alright, you'ld put it differently but at least you accept some commonalities. Now, let's try to explain them.'
Yes, but:
i) I don't want to populate, It's not a sociological model or a research proposl. It's a heuristic. I want to understand.
ii) I *think* it's about people who would self describe as 'on the Left' or 'Progressive'. So I'm not really including people like PP
iii) The main point is that people on all sides might see a - sort of - quadrant, see that there are anomalies, and have a think about it. I know (and get on with) people who are anomalies: GC/AZ and TRA/Z
OK, this is a product of speculative tweeting on the train, and trying to do more than one thing at a time.
The first thing I'm trying to do is to construct a quadrant. That goes: Z/GC, Z/TRA, AZ/GC, AZ/TRA.
The second thing I'm trying to do is to acknowledge that these binaries and their descriptions are contested, but I'm trying to suggest something that is a heuristic.
So, some people - Queers for Palestine, for example - will say 'Well, obviously, AZ/TRA go together, because (xxx). They will have a normative, political, thesis (about breaking down boundaries, sideing with the most opressed, allyship, Butler, something). But there is also an empricial explanation of why these things go together.
I agree that Z/GC should be a crushing majority. But I'm interested in both the empiricial and the normative chains. And the existence of anomalies is interesting. My ancestor group as a student revolutionary is now roughly Z/TRA. And there are certainly AZ/GC people about. My aim is not really to start fights over labels and defininitions but, at least as a starter, to observe alliances and commonalities.
(Hope you are well)
What an amazing event. Thank you to all of the feminists who joined us and who took the time afterwards to tell us their own stories. A special thank you to @KhadijaKhan__ , @bindelj, and @sleeepysandy for our discussion and to @nicolelampert and @realzoestrimpel, who I did my very first presentation with on this topic—even before the book was published—and to @FAAntisemitism for bringing us together. And thank you, always, to the team at @centre_as.
... If this pattern is right, then there's at least three sorts of explanation invited
1) what's the sociological/empirical explanation? Why does it fall like this?
2) what's the normative explanation? Who's right?
3) what about the anomalies?..
