Not a single MP identified anything the Code got wrong about the law in the Commons statement on Monday. There was just lots of whinging about the fact they didn’t like the law. Well, you’re MPs. You’re in a better position than most to campaign to change it. I and other feminists will oppose you every step of the way though.
The Code isn’t itself secondary legislation. It’s guidance that explains the law. The time for MPs to scrutinise the Eq Act’s single-sex exceptions was when Parliament passed this law back in 2010. If MPs want to change the law they need to change the law, not block guidance.
I would like to set the supporters of this Early Day Motion an exam to check they understand legally what they are advocating for and against? https://t.co/KSqd4ERXFK
Info for @edballs:
- The @EHRC Code of Practice is not about workplaces
- Mixed-sex only changing rooms in workplaces are not lawful. Workplaces must have sufficient workplace facilities which are either single-sex or single-user (Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regs 1992)
Well this is quite the roll of dishonour - MPs who don't understand that the law in question is the Equality Act, as interpreted by the Supreme Court. So who are trying to prevent statutory guidance on that law from being approved, because 🤷♀️

Our draft Code of Practice helps providers of services, public functions and associations apply the Equality Act 2010. It doesn't apply to workplaces; employers should consult the Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regs 1992, the Equality Act, and seek independent legal advice.
For anyone interested in an expert view on why women's spaces are important to domestic abuse survivors (hello, @UKLabour, @CommonsWEC & other parliamentarians 👋!) Karen's book is brilliant. She is former chief exec of @nia_endingVAWG (a women's refuge charity)
I have good news. I'm delighted to share that Judge Campbell refused PCS Union's strike out application rejecting their argument that my indirect discrimination case had no reasonable chance of success. You can read my update here: https://t.co/6tWcRAFZK5
Thank you @SusannaRustin. The amount of disinformation, misinformation and outright misogyny in response to clarification of law/EHRC code is utterly depressing. The reaction of TUs is a disgrace, exposing the contempt so many in the movement clearly have for women's rights...
The Fire Brigades Union does not support the 2010 Equality Act that consolidated all previous sex discrimination legislation.
It wants to remove the legal rights of women & girls fought for over generations to enable their equal participation in public life.
Regressive & sexist.
Please take time to read about women organizing in PCS Union. They have laid motions on VAWG and spoken out against motions challenging the EHRC code of practice. Support their important efforts by listening to a speech and reading one motion they tabled. https://t.co/FZaAgLoF0j
I am delighted to announce that 'Sex, Gender Identity and Sport', is published today by Routledge and now available for order. It's edited by me, and an academic text so a bit on the pricey side, but use Code 26AFLY1 for a 20% discount.

The most sobering lesson for me of the last 10 years has been just how little the rights and voices of women matter in our society. @glosswitch is right. It is outrageous
I wrote this because yes, women's legal right to single-sex spaces might have been affirmed but it's undermined in practice by politicians who think we should be sad and apologetic about it https://t.co/IwDTqiu8Qw
A really significant moment for me as a young feminist was realising I'd grown up in a country where it was legal for men to rape their wives. I was 16 when making it illegal was being "debated" >
“Now the war is over, trans activists have lost territory that was never theirs to control. It won’t be women who reject the EHRC peace plan.” Share token.
