Yogachara, Zen and the True Nature of Mind ☸️
According to the Yogachara tradition of Buddhist Philosophy and Psychology - Consciousness, Mind and Conceptualization are intimately related.
Yogachara teaches that The Mind, by its very nature, is constantly creating Concepts, Labels, and Judgments. It’s like an artist that never stops painting, crafting a world of ideas and perceptions based on our sensory experiences. While this ability allows us to navigate daily life, it also becomes the root of our Delusion and thus, Suffering.
The problem arises, as per Yogachara philosophy, when this constant conceptualization covers up the True Nature of Things. It’s like looking at a painting and mistaking it for the actual landscape.
Instead of seeing reality as it is, The Mind projects its interpretations and constructs onto everything we encounter. This is how Consciousness, which should be a tool for Awareness, ends up trapping us in a web of Delusion, preventing us from seeing the Reality clearly.
We get caught up in the stories Mind tells about who we are and what the world is, all the while missing the direct, unfiltered experience of life.
The way out, according to both Yogachara and Zen, is to live totally in the Present Moment. In the Here and Now. By being fully aware of our immediate experience, without the filters of past conditioning or future expectations, we can begin to see beyond The Mind’s habitual patterns and touch the True Nature of Reality.
This emphasis on the Present Moment, the Here and Now, is a core aspect of Zen practice, which takes its philosophical foundation from Yogachara teachings. By sitting in silent Meditation, watching thoughts and sensations come and go without getting caught in them, without any judgement, we cultivate the ability to experience life directly, as it is, without the distorting lens of Mind’s Concepts.
In essence, Yogachara tradition of Buddhist Philosophy and Psychology shows us that The Mind is both the creator of Delusion and the key to Liberation. By understanding how The Mind works and learning to live in the Present Moment, we open the door to Enlightenment, seeing Reality as it truly is. This is the essence of the path to Awakening. And therefore this is the essence of Cessation of Suffering. 🙏🙏
