Many sons/daughters of immigrants that go into a healthcare profession do so because they watched the healthcare system fail a family member. We’re trying to be those healthcare professionals, public health leaders, & advocates that we wished our family members would have had.
I am no longer using the term impostor phenomenon/syndrome. I have decided to call it belonging deprivation instead. This places the onus on the environment, not the person. It also provides the remedy in the name.
I want to dedicate National Doctors Day to women trailblazers like Dr. Elena Rios, CEO of the National Hispanic Medical Association, who work selflessly to help create a better healthcare system for patients and future doctors.

A few years ago, I was walking around in a blizzard in SoHo (New York). It was late, midnight, and it was beautiful.
Some friends, about 15 blocks away, called: "come over?"
It was late, it was cold, was tired, thought "maybe not worth it" but then...
