Ongoing: The Court of Appeal sitting in Fort Portal has commenced a two-day civil appeals session, during which 30 civil appeals are scheduled for hearing. The session began today, June 17, 2026, and will conclude tomorrow, June 18, 2026.

Proceedings are being presided over by a panel of three justices: Lady Justice Eva Luswata, Justice John Mike Musisi, and Justice Musa Ssekaana.

According to the cause list issued by HW Janeva Natukunda (Deputy Registrar Court of Appeal), matters set for hearing cover a wide range of civil disputes, majority of which relate to land matters. Other cases involve breach of contract, fraud, judicial review, and claims for damages.

The Court will also hear an election petition appeal in the matter of Muhumuza Edson v. Kitono Ronald, filed in 2026.

Appellants and their legal representatives are present in Court.

Opening the session, the head of the panel, Lady Justice Luswata, informed court users that an official opening ceremony will be held tomorrow and presided over by the Deputy Chief Justice, Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi.

As part of the opening ceremony, the Deputy Chief Justice will engage with key stakeholders to receive feedback and discuss challenges affecting the administration of justice in Fort Portal and surrounding areas.

The session forms part of the Court’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to justice, reduce case backlog, and bring appellate services closer to the people

Registering a motorcycle for the first time now costs more.

Under the passed FY 2026/27 Budget, excise duty on motorcycles at first registration has increased from Shs200,000 to Shs500,000.

Government expects to raise Shs26 billion from this change.

Some salaried workers will now keep a little more of their monthly pay.

PAYE is the tax deducted from an employee’s salary before they receive their pay.

Under the passed FY 2026/27 Budget, the monthly PAYE threshold has increased from Shs235,000 to Shs335,000.

This means PAYE deductions will now begin after a worker earns above Shs335,000 a month.

Landlords will now pay rental income tax every month.

Under the passed FY 2026/27 Budget, tax on rental income will be paid monthly instead of waiting for a longer tax period.

Rental income tax is the tax paid on money earned from renting out houses, apartments, shops or other property.

Before this change, landlords generally filed and paid it through the annual income tax return system.

#UnpopularOpinion #378. *Warning. Long post. It’s important to inhibit anger & frustration and listen to someone. On Friday as I retired late in the evening from office, a driver crashed into me at the Katabi traffic lights in Entebbe. We were both in the inner lane meaning we were wheeling onto our right to Katabi barracks junction. He was in front of me & when the lights allowed us, he drove as if he’s going that direction. Seeing that he was too slow, I drove to his left because the seconds given by the lights at that junction are only 10. As I pushed to beat the seconds, I had a huge crash. Actually, he never intended to branch. He was driving to Entebbe Airport. I immediately stopped & inquired from him why he did so. We moved to safety & I tried to call the police. He begged that I don’t, since he feared them. He requested that we solve the issue. I demanded that he repairs my car. He asked to be told how much it is. 1m I said. He looked to the skies. 50k sir. “Ok, give me your DP”. He did. I kept it & told him to go & we sort it out the following day. He called again on Saturday to say he could afford 150k. Yesterday he came over to my office to deliver the money. So, I left my office to go and get his DP from my car. Unknown to him(police officer in me), I was monitoring him through the window. He started to wipe tears from his eyes. When I came back, he pretended he was ok. It was at this time that I inquired about who he was & what he went to do in Entebbe. Apparently, he’s a veteran who retired 10 years ago. He’s struggled to put food on the table. His wife left him. He got that old Premio from sale of mukene in small tins in Namungoona. Someone paid him only 100k to pick a relative who had suffered mental issues from “Sawudi” He bought fuel for 50k hoping to keep 40k after paying 10 for EHW road toll. “Now this kisirani”. He borrowed 150k to come & pay me. By the time he finished the narration, I was crying with him. “Mzalendo. Hamka. Nimekusaheme”. Is it possible to hear someone out before we vet our anger?
