In light of the Sem Chat on MLK's "Letter From Birmingham Jail," this article from Gale Literature highlights King's "approach to oppression" and expands on the necessity of "Christian humanism" in order to advocate for all kinds of equality. https://t.co/Jsyrci99O2
A4. Dr. King says, "we will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people." The most common problem that devalues humanity is the stigma around the less fortunate. #sensemchat
Q4. What do you think are the most common problems in modern American society that devalues humanity? How can we as almost-alumna of the Sacred Heart be the change we want to see in the world for one of these problems? #sensemchat
@DJGreen2021 This is so well said. I love how you said it "encompasses all of those states of being, yet manages to transcend them as well," because oppression does exactly that but I never thought to explain it that way.
A3 I think oppression is the diminishing of one's ideas, thoughts, actions, and even existence. Oppression affects physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states as one suffers injustice. #sensemchat
A3. The truest nature of oppression and inequality is ignorance and apathy. When we are apathetic to the issues that our world faces or we ignore micro-aggressions because they do not affect us specifically, we allow bad behavior to continue. #sensemchat
@AlanaFrederick_@DJGreen2021 I like this idea, Alana, but then what does that say about inherent goodness? Does doing bad things without inherently knowing overrule our inherent goodness?
A2. Yes, I believe people do wrong things in the belief that they are doing the right thing. The goal is not to excuse their actions, but to educate them on why and how to better themselves as Dr. King did. #sensemchat
A1. I think is the purpose of nonviolence according to Dr. King is to seek out and defeat injustice. In violence, vengeance and pain comes out against the people, and not entirely the problem at hand. #sensemchat
A9: Good news! For now all kids eat for free at school and in summer due to #COVID19. Kids can get more benefits (like PEBT) & help their school get more funding when eligible families sign up for free school meals. Families can apply directly at their school! #FoodFri
A10b: Healthy Free School Meals for All would allow schools to avoid the impossible choice between providing meals to all children & resources for their education. As we move to recovery, we have the opportunity to ensure all students are hunger-free & ready to learn. #FoodFri
A10a: #COVID taught us the current system does not reach all students who need it. Many kids who need nutritious free #schoolmeals don't qualify or face barriers to access them. NY districts now face impossible fiscal decisions with their limited school budgets. #FoodFri
THANK YOU, TEACHERS! Our Lower School students are planting a beautiful "garden" to show our appreciation for all that you do! Without our teachers and mentors, Sacred Heart wouldn't be the wonderful place it is. Thank you for sewing the seeds of joy, love, and curiosity! 💚
