I shared a story of a guy who spent 12 years preparing for civil services.

And after all those years chasing success, he was now feeling extremely hopeless. Hopeless, not only in terms of career but also in terms of lost time and relationships.

That tweet has so far gathered 26 lakh views and thousands of comments. It has also unfolded a debate which is not settling any time soon.

It’s a debate on if a career in government is so lucrative that you spend this kind of time preparing for it.
Many people see it as a govt job vs private job dilemma.

I see it differently.

And to make you see it I choose the extreme bests of both.

That is, I want to see it as a dilemma between a career in IAS or if today IIT-IIM combination happens to be a better choice.

I’m using IAS, IIT, IIM to highlight the best in their respective areas.

I believe, those who have not spent this amount of time preparing for an exam, let alone civil services, find it mind numbing to see someone slog it out for an exam for this long.

In this regard, I’m writing this post because a student sent me an inbox asking me why did I take the stance that I took in a recent video that I made on BeginUPSC channel.

It was a video on discussing various civil services, in which I discussed this IAS vs IIT-IIM dilemma too.

He writes that my arguments have convinced him that IAS is a more fulfilling job.

I think I made my arguments as unbiased as I could be.

Yet, if you feel I’ve advocated one over another, then I stand guilty of altering your choices, although inadvertently.

I just want to inform you about various possibilities in civil services through that video.

I have highlighted the time location in the screenshot below where I discuss this IAS vs IIT-IIM thing in the video.

Also, if you have muddled thoughts unable to decide which career to choose and are choosing civil services thinking of only becoming an IAS, I really think you should watch this video before starting out unaware of what you might get into.
