The smuggling in of a realist bio-medical ontology of being always attempts to over-rule the phemomenological being of an individual in favour of an institutionalised set of abstractions.
Psych language is designed to make the fictitious appear factual, to make harms appear a necessary trade off, & to give an aura of solid foundation to castles built in the sky.
@unusual_whales Based on the AI assignments I've seen, I'm not sure they have any idea of the gap between mindless regurgitation devoid of understanding, and novel meaningful contributions which advance human knowledge
“Our mental health sector has become 'the new opium of the people' by working to pathologise the social suffering that would otherwise galvanise people to political action - spreading an ideological sedative powerful enough to disable the human impulse for social reform.”

By @JDaviesPhD (see reply for full thread):
“One of the most significant barriers to social justice in recent decades has emerged from the mental health field itself, in the form of an ideology now so pervasive and well-protected by powerful interests that it often escapes critical scrutiny in popular public discourse.
“This ideology, which originated in the institutions of bio-psychiatry in the early 20th century, has rapidly spread across most Western societies since the 1980s, propelled by pharmaceutical interests, the over-pathologisation of emotional distress, and neoliberal governance.
“In essence, this ideology has increasingly framed emotional suffering as a sign of internal dysfunction or disorder best treated with psych-interventions. Since the 1980s, these interventions have predominantly been psycho-pharmaceutical (for example, nearly one quarter of adults in many Western nations are now prescribed psychiatric drugs annually), and 'adaptive' insofar as these interventions have prioritised reintegrating suffering and straying individuals back into an assumed 'functional' and healthy status quo.”
@PhilBeadle Experience of marginalisation from mainstream education and speed run them to exclusion. I'd also be fascinated to see some work on students attitudes towards education itself. It seems some staff feel it discourages an interest in learning and may reduce their holistic abilities
@PhilBeadle I found it interesting talking to people involved in theae programs at their schools that low level disruption seemed to reduce, but extremis behaviour dramatically increased. There's something to be said for considering how these more high control approaches increase students
@O2VicWarehouse An employee let me know my fiance's phone was in your cloakroom, however since saturday we've been trying to contact someone and had no replies via any customer service channel (email and phone). Could someone please assist me in getting it returned?
@ThePhDPlace Pretty hard Duh (I have had and will continue to have minj breakdowns about why this is so much harder than any academic journey I've been on)
@bolsh3vik Genuine question. As the RCP in the UK is the former IMT section who where commited to labour and decided not to challenge Labour seats in elections, are the RCP still committed to that approach?
🚨 NEW: David Lammy confirms Labour has DITCHED its plans to recognise a Palestinian state.
Labour will instead delay recognition indefinitely, making it conditional on Israel feeling "safe and secure" as part of a "credible" and "viable" peace process.
@AhmadRehanKhan Are we saying we cannot identify mental 'disorders' as social constructs? They tautalogically are. What matters however is if we them go down a Szaszian line or one that takes their constructed nature seriously.
@kopopoulous@lgbtcooperators@UKLabour In the UK you cannot access gender affirming surgery under 18 years old. The only result of these anti-trans policies so far been increased child suicide, which was clearly indicated by actual experts would happen. Please stop pretending this was ever about protecting children.
